Watain - Casus Luciferi is damned good.
So is The Essence Of Black Purity.

After seeing you signature, and having just bought it and worshipped it, Mercyful Fate-Melissa.
I know it isn't the modern definition of black metal, but the atmosphere it just evil and camp; it's awesome. Same for Venom-Black Metal.

Aye, 'tis good. Those two bands, and particularly, those two albums, are turning points in metal
You should check out some of the other bands listed in this thread, they all have true cult essence, and if you like honest, wrought-from-the-deepest-caverns-within atmospheric metal, I reckon you'll dig them.

Drudkh - forgotten legends
Wolves in the Throne Room - two hunters

Before hearing these I never would have thought that electric guitars could sound like they should be listened to in a forest.

Aetheres - Thirst for The Mystery of the Night

Such an awesome album. It has this really foggy/misty sound to it which just seems to reek of the dream world.

I haven't given black metal a chance in ages really, although I was listening to ITNE before. AWESOME atmosphere.

all IMO and maybe not the standard BM records like Mayhem or Emperor...but they are all evil in league with satan. :D

Dissection - Storm of the Lights Bane - Ok, this is Black Metal, but not the true norwegian way...

Hellhammer - Demon Entrails (Triumph of Death, Death Fiend and
Satanic Rites Demos) very creepy satanic garage :D atmosphere

Sodom - The Final Sign of Evil / In the Sign of Evil / Obsessed by Cruelty

Celtic Frost - Monotheist - It's not my favourite CF album, but the atmosphere is very very very evil and dark

Abigor - Fractal Possession - the strangest BM album I've ever heard...

Cradle of Filth - Vempire / Dusk and Her embrace - Say what you want, but at that time they were BM and the atmosphere on tracks like "Ebony Dressed for Sunset" or "Nocturnal Supremacy" or "Heaven torn Asunder" or "Funeral at Carpathia" is just great.

And not to forget: COF - Cruelty and the Beast, Midian and Damnation and a Day.

I see Dissection as being more death metal, although it is fucking awesome.

Aren't they white power? I may be thinking of someone else like Nordic Thunder or something here but whatever.
