Anybody else listened to these guys? I don't care much for their debut, but the new album, Lupus Dei, is such a fantastic slab of catchy heavy metal. Yes, catchy is the main aspect here, these guys can create choruses so powerful and addictive they will stick to your head and force you humm them even when you sleep. Just listen to songs like Saturday Satan, Mother Mary Is A Bird Of Pray, Tigers Of Sabrod or We Take It From The Living and see what I mean. Although pretty much every track is a stand out. The vocalist has a pretty distinctive voice and very good technical abilities, he gives a lot to the band. I was surprised to see he's Romanian, we can say at last we have a good goddamn heavy metal singer in this country. Even if he does live in Germany!
I like the keyboard in this band. I'm usually not crazy about this instrument in heavy or power metal, but Powerwolf uses it very intelligently, it has an almost church-like quality to its sound, it lends solemnity to many passages. There's plenty of tasty riffs and leads here, and the dark lyrics are also a plus, they make these guys look like a more accessible version of Mercyful Fate. You need talent to marry satanic lyrics with heavy metal and Powerwolf does a great job at it. Check it out.
