Thanks to EpicMetalFan, I checked out a sample from Wotan - Carmina Barbarica. This is good stuff! Kind of like Bathory, slow and plodding. Are the earlier albums any good? And are there any similar bands?

The '93 Wotan demo supposedly is very good. Their "Under the Sign of Odin's Crows" cd is bad, Carmina is rather mediocre if you ask me. They basically have more Manowar elements that Bathory. There are plenty of Italian bands in this style that are better than Wotan. Try Doomsword, or the unparalleled Domine debut "Champion Eternal". Also you can check out Adramelch's "Broken History" for a more prog epic approach, as well as the latest Martiria album (can't remember the name). And also Holy Martyr, but they are also mediocre imo so...

I think Wotan is good, not mediocre. and yeah there's many Italian bands playing great epic metal better than them though. Dark Quarterer being my no.1 fav ;)

new album "Epos" is due out soon. They have a single "vae Victus", but im not sure you will really find anyting out there other than the debut. All of those listed are great bands. I too prefer Domine to all of them, especially the last two albums.

Tell me more about Dark Quarterer I have seen them on ebay. Can you give me a description of their sound?

I'd say original progressive epic metal, kinda like Adramelch in that respect, but even more mystyfying. Their best album is the second (the etruscan prophecy), recently re-released on vinyl. If you're into doomier sounds, then you'll also appreciate the first. The rest are not that hot imo.
