I've always seen prog rock and technical rock as being almost interchangeable. Is there really a difference between the two? I know both emphasize musical talent and instrumental skills. But on the other hand, Porcupine Tree doesn't really strike me as being all that technical. Nor do Tool and Radiohead. So now I'm totally confused. |

I guess it depends on what you call technical rock... there's been many bands with great technical skills that didn't play prog music in anyway... Queen was technical yet no prog, same with Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, The Police, Dismemberment Plan, Faraquet etc... and then there could be some prog with low technical abilities (Pink Floyd, except for Gilmour) and lots of bands in the 80's neo-prog wave (Marillion, Pendragon, Pallas etc... those guys aren't bad but their definitely not maestri in their instruments)... so I guess it's all about what criterias you use to define a particular genre... 8) |

Couldn't we ask the same question for prog metal/ tech metal (clean vox)? I can't think of a single band that I would label technical rock. I guess I just usually call it prog rock if there is any sign of technicality. There are, however, prog rock bands that are more technical than others. Yes, Rush, Pink Floyd are the only bands I can think of that I listen to in this genre. Edit - I also listen to some modern prog rock; Moon Safari, Flower Kings |

I would call Dream Theater and Pagan's Mind modern prog metal bands, I would call Nevermore and Communic tech metal bands. |
