This is pretty sweet. I'm a big fan of their early 80's shit, I've never seen any footage of it before. I don't care what anyone says, they did some pretty kick ass shit back then. The stuff with Phil is pretty cool, too. That Power Metal album is so goddamn good. Phil looks like Danzig in these videos.

Anyway, check it out and dig it, or laugh at it! Haha.

Works for me. I'm listening to "Heavy Metal Rules" right now. Such a badass tune. It looks like Darrell was a bit of a showoff at 19 years old. He does like 15 minute solos!

Try seeing that shit live in person at a free show at Rose Park in Abilene, TX. They "Headlined" with a band called Frenzy. Cool show.
The Abbotts had family in Abilene, and spent a lot of time there in the late 80's.

Fun Fact: Dimbag's second band "Diamonds" lost a high school talent show to a Christian Rock band.

Nice. I would have loved to have seen them back then.

I bought every single pre-Cowboys Pantera CD from some label "Reborn Classics." He reissued all kinds of old, out of print material from bands like Helstar, Shok Paris, and obscure 80's metal/rock bands.

I really do like the old Pantera material, even with the predictable 80's cheese factor popping up here and there. Solid stuff.

Anyway, I heard that guy who ran Reborn Classics got thrown into a German Jail for releasing all these CD's! Glad I got 'em when I did.

Really? Haha. Goddamn.

I have the first three on Reborn Classics, Metal Magic is a split with an old Shok Paris CD. Projects In The Jungle and I Am The Night are on one CD. I have an original of Power Metal.

The problem with the Reborn Classic bootlegs is that they're ripped from a record, so they sound like ass, all that crackle and pop. I do hope Vinnie re-releases them. That would be killer.

Here's some more footage with Kerry King. The second clip they play "Power Metal" and "Death Trap" from the Power Metal album. Then the do "The Green Manilishi" and "Hell Bent For Leather." I have no idea why Kerry King is playing with them, but there's some cool footage here.

Wait, this is all in '89? Exactly how quick was the decision this band made to totally ditch their image and sound for their more well-known aggro one?

Dude, they evolved. They grew up, basically. Evolved over time. They didn't look very 80's rock in 1989, they dressed more like Anthrax did back then, the only thing was that Dimebag had an afro. Haha. If you look at the pics from Cowboys From Hell their look isn't too far removed from this look.

But to ditch your entire back catalogue in the space of a year? That's not evolving.
