Help! I've only recently started getting into Iron Maiden and I've downloaded some Mp3s of their's but I cannot continue like this, they are too great a band to steal music from. I want to know where to start with their albums, there are so many and I don't know which to buy first!

I got started on Number Of The Beast, and I still think that's the best one.

I agree with this statement, as this is where I started with them. However, they have such a consistent catalogue, you could start anywhere. Just make sure to stay away from the dark era of Maiden (when Bruce left for awhile and was replaced by Blaze Bayley). This encompasses the albums "The X Factor" and "Virtual XI". That said, their first two albums with Di'Anno, "Iron Maiden" and "Killers" are also kick ass. Hope this helps.

I enjoyed the X Factor. It was certainly better than No Prayer For the Dying, and probably Fear of the Dark as well.

Don't listen to this guy. Get everything.

Just start with a couple of the 82-88 albums before checking out the other stuff.

Telling him to get everything isn't gonna help him. If he could do that, he wouldn't need our advice.

I suggest Powerslave as a starter. The Number of the Beast or Killers would suffice almost as well. Do not start with Piece of Mind or Somewhere in Time. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son is one of the best albums ever, but I don't know if it's the one to start with. Somewhere along the lines you'll need to get Dance of Death, but that one I'm positive isn't the one to start with.

Ah, well, to each his own, I guess. I will agree that Iron Maiden at their worst, which I believe to be the Blaze Bayley albums, are still one of the best outfits around. I think NotB is the best place to start because I'm sure most of us agree that Maiden with Bruce at the mic is the best grouping.

The first I bought was Best of the Beast (single disc version) and it worked out fine for me, despite the absence of Di'Anno era stuff.

Ed Hunter is a better compilation but not worth the money.

Yeah, now that you mention it, good call. It's a good introduction to all the early hits.

Get Killers first man, its soooo fucking awesome. Every song is good but I recommend these above all else.

Wrath Child
Murders in the Rue Morgue
Killers
Purgatory
Twilight Zone

Ha ha thats like half the album...but oh my god, they're soo fucking awesome.

Powerslave is my favorite and the strongest record I've heard from them. The first two records were early classics, and Number of the Beast was great, but for me none of them had the consistent excellency that Powerslave managed.

Yet another shallow anti-Blaze comment. You are not a true fan of Maiden if you refuse to accept those two OUTSTANDING albums.

Those 2 albums are better than the the following Maiden albums: Fear Of The Dark, Brave New World, Dance Of Death, No Prayer For The Dying & Killers.

If you want to experience everything Maiden has to offer, check out the Blaze-Maiden era as well as the Bruce and Di'Anno era. Make your own opinions.

I totally agree with you that a Maiden newbie should experience all three singers. That said, I don't see how me thinking that the Blaze albums, by Maiden standards, are subpar restricts me from being a true fan. I happen to like each album you mentioned more than the Blaze albums, with the possible exception of No Prayer for the Dying. I don't think the Blaze albums are awful, they are actually better than I thought they would be; but what I love about Iron Maiden is how their passion shines through in their music. To my ears, Virtual XI and The X-Factor have the least amount of energy and passion of any albums in the Maiden catalogue.

EDIT - I reread your post. If you mean that a true Maiden fan should accept those albums as a necessary part of the catalogue, I agree. I would only disagree if you meant that one must think they are outstanding to be a true fan.
