Well, I do not really know if there is such a category, but are there any great bands or songs that would fall into a such category?

I'm thinking most Blind Guardian stuff or Rain of a Thousand Flames (which is all i know of Rhapsody).

I was looking up Blind Guardian on wikipedia, and notcied there was an Epic Metal link (it only has two BG links - Nightfall and something else, do not quite remember)

Any suggestions on bands, songs, albums?

Thanks

If you want something similar to BG, try Persuader. Evolution Purgatory is a very good album.

Anyway my recommendation goes to both Avantasia albums. You can't go more epic than this IMO.

Avantasia indeed. Also try Symphony X - Odyssey, Wuthering Heights - Far from the Madding Crowd, and Blind Guardian - A night at the Opera. I could sit here and name a million epic sounding bands, but I'll just name a few of my personal favorites.

Iced Earth has their share of epic songs, especially Gettysburg Trilogy.

Most concept albums are epic IMO.

Also I think Therion is very Epic.

I would agree with some of the reccomendations i have heard. Symphony X- The Odyssey, Avantasia, and the Gettysburg Trilogy are all very good.

What about Running Wild? Are they disqualified for not having soaring vocals?

I always preferred the lower register, vaguely thrashy vocals, unless we're talking about really exceptional, one-in-a-billion singers like Halford or Hansi..

I think they have some epic songs, especially those long ones.

no way ! Running Wild are plain heavy metal... not that epic and then they haven't released any good shit in years...

as for suggestions, look at this wikipedia link : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epic_metal

it's far from perfect but I hope it helped

Man, they fit my definition of epic.. I know it's not popular, but I hate the power metal standard of epic now.. all double pedalling, soaring vocals, backed by orchestration.. I think that sucks, just pointlessly over the top.. more farce than epic.

Running Wild don't exactly put out quality music all the time but Death or Glory and Black Hand Inn are full of pirate battle hymns and rousing melodies, which evoke much more in me than any amount of fucking violins.

I know I sounded like holy terror just then but frankly sometimes you have to. :P

I think the band Domine fits into the epic metal genre nicely. Long power metal tracks, all epic sounding. Check out Stormbringer Ruler or Emporer Of The Black Runes.
Heavenly would also fit into epic metal. Check out Sign Of The Winner or Dust To Dust.
Also check out Fairyland, Dragonforce, Dragonland, Thy Majesty & Magic Kingdom.

id check out some yes
with songs like gates of delirium, thats epic

but its probably not what your looking for...

id give the thumbs up on kamelot, BG, dragonforce, iced earth

i would however stear clear of Gettysburg, some like it
but i find the vocals lack melody, it hard to describe but it almost as if they tryed singing a passage out of a textbook, instrumentally its mind blowingly amazing, and the subject matter is pretty cool but , the words just dont seem to flow together. know what i mean?
night of the stormrider is pretty epic, and jaw droppingly awsome in every possible way
