Listening to train of thought recently and I think the answer is yes.

I think you put a few too many genres together there. They are certainly one of the best pure progressive metal bands. The absolute best will just depend on personal taste.

Train of Thought is indeed awesome.

I think they're the greatest band that can be mentioned in this sub-forum.

Wow. Hem. How to put it gently... Oh, yes :

Iron FUCKING Maiden ?

First they're not a power metal band so that eliminates them from that niche. As far as straight prog they might be considered the best although there are some other bands that fit that bill.

This, plus DT isn't True either, unless I'm really missing something out. Probably the best Prog band though... yes. Probably.

DT never caught my attention like Fates Warning, I can't say much else about them, I've only ever heard Octavarium

Well, that's your problem. Check out some other albums, man. I like Octavarium, but it's hardly their best album. Try Train of Thought, Images & Words, and Awake. If you don't like those, then you just don't like prog metal.

Dream Theater used to be the best around. Now? GTFO.

I think to truly understand dream theater you have to have listened to Images & Words, Awake, Scenes from a memory, and train of thought, at the minimum.

Images & Words is the only album I like from them, but that album is a milestone in all music, not only metal.

Really you don't like Scenes from a memory?

Not the way I like I&W. I&W is 100+, one of the few albums that I consider to be perfect, every second of it. Scenes is like an 80 for me, I don't like all songs, maybe because is less melodic than I&W. And I don't like any of the post 2000 works, too heavy for LaBrie's voice.

As a side note, every fan of DT should listen to Dreamscape's End of Light (2004), one of the best prog albums I've ever heard.

I like Images better then Scenes myself even though Scenes is a good DT album.

Images & Words, A Change Of Seasons, and Train Of Thought are masterpieces.

Six Degrees and Scenes From A Memory are amazing.

WDADU, Falling Into Infinity, and Octavarium are great.

I've never been too crazy about Awake for some weird reason.

Systematic Chaos and BC&SL are pretty "meh," even if The Count Of Tuscany is one of the best songs they've ever written.

Overall, I'd say they're a pretty awesome band.

Yes.

Because my real favorite Prog band is two bands with seemingly interchangeable members.

Rush are a hard rock band that mixes prog (earlier) and pop (later) elements or both (since 93), but they are not a metal band. That said: Rush 1980-2000 > DT 1990-2010. Barely.

Rush is really good, but it's more rock than metal. Bands like Rush, Yes, Marillion, King Crimson, Fates Warning, Queensryche, Crimson Glory, all are fathers to that awesome bastard child that is DT. They took the best of Prog Rock and Melodic Metal and made one of the best albums ever.
