I've had Train of Thought in my listening rotation for the past couple of weeks and that album has aged amazingly well. It was my first Dream Theater album and it sits even with Images & Words as my favorite from them. Every song on the album is perfect. Every time I listen to it I sit in eager anticipation for certain sections of songs that I know by heart. Great stuff.

I'm interested to see what DT's next album will sound like. I feel like everything post-TOT has been good, but nothing matches the combination of prog stylings and metallic crunch that they perfected on TOT.

I agree that ToT is one of their high points. I was listening to it a couple of months ago, and it still sounds fresh and inspired as when I first heard it. I think it also helps that it followed 6 Degrees (I think), which was IMO way over the top. So the straight foward approach really gave them some new life.

Personal favorite is In the Name of God, especially the live version on Live at Budokan.

I hold it just below Images and Words and had a similar experience to yours a few months back. Great album.

I always see people hating it, yet it's my favourite album of theirs. Go figure .

Well, it came out during the "Great Nu Metal Scare." So, because they went in a heavier, more straight forward direction, people felt required to hate it in order not to hurt their metal credibility.

Fucking awesome album. The last couple minutes or so of This Dying Soul have so much relentless shred that it makes my head explode.

Sometimes, there's just too much shred for me to take at any given point in time, but when the time is right, that album is pretty much perfect.

And yeah, ToT was their latest high point. They've never been able to live up to it since. Here's hoping their next one will.

Yep, great great great album. Putting it on after not having heard it in ages is like seeing an old friend again.

Went ahead and stuck this on too. Oh man, nostalgia trip...this used to be my favorite album. It was also the first metal album that I remember listening to and just being like "Wow, this is fucking awesome." I think it was at the solo part at the end of This Dying Soul that did it...memory lane for sure--that had to be like six-seven years ago. This Dying Soul is still so goddamn awesome.

I think it is the best DT album that I have listened to. The only DT album I can listen to from start to finish without feeling the need to take a break in between.
