As a producer and songwriter, he will be missed. As a drummer, he is replaceable, regardless of how incredible he is. I hope the new album is going to show us something different and positive.

He said he had more fun playing with Avenged Sevenfold than playing with Dream Theater the past year. Nuff said.

I don't know if he's replacable... They will definitely not be the same.

I'm not a drummer, so maybe i'm not fit to comment, but there are so many incredible drummers out there that I don't think it would be that difficult to replace him musically.

Aquilles Priestier (Angra/Hangar) would be a magnificent replacement. That would be my dream choice. I think he is better than MP by a mile anyway.

We'll see.. There's no-one out the with the same style, so there'll be a distinct change. Anyway, it's not like DT have created mindblowing music the last couple of years, and maybe this is a turn for the better.

The guy was the main man of the band much more than just the drummer. DT will go on their are plenty of capable drummers but will they be as successful? time will tell.

The dream choice would be Neil Peart. :omfg:

DT would be a waste of his talent though.

Well, true. Be pretty awesome, though. This is a great excuse to mix things up a little. I loved BC&SL, but let's hope the new album is a shift away from that style.

Remember that it was Portnoy who wanted them to modernize all the time, including the rapping/barking and stuff, so maybe this isn't all bad :P

I wouldn't mind rapping in my Dream Theater if it was, like, Chuck D. But Mike Portnoy? No no no no.

Yeah. I want old Dream Theater back. When it was about the riffs and the melodies, not trying to live up to their heroes legacies and excesses.

Hell, just listen to LTE and Petrucci's solo album, we all know where the real songwriting talent is in the band. Myung is great too, but his input is somewhat less frequent but richer in quality, according to one of the commentaries they did.

And let James write some shit too, his EOP album was the best thing related to DT released since SFAM.

I think DT's problem lately has actually been Portnoy. The guy is a drummer and more than likely (and this mostly speculative bullshit) he is giving at least some direction to the other guys who can convey their own musical ideas so much better than Mike's. Or maybe they write all the music in their heads, who knows, my point is a non-guitarist telling a virtuoso his ideas for guitar riffs is just not really the way to go in my opinion.

That hammer swings both ways. If Yngwie can't tell Cozy how to play drums, why is Portnoy telling the other guys how to play too. We know it isn't that dramatic, but still. We've seen these guys when they just play and it is better than the ideas the band as a whole has been coming up with lately.

Don't get me wrong. DT still put out great albums, but not the masterpieces they used to. It's a difficult thing to bitch about, but seriously, they aren't out of ideas, they just probably have no business producing their own records. Let's hope they get a quality producer in there next time.

Based upon the incredible stupidity and ridiculousness of this decision, I expect to see a statement that Portnoy will be joining forces with Timo Tolkki soon.

So is he joining Avenged Sevenfold full-time?

Speaking of Timo looks like Revolution Renaissance is over and they are about to release another album.

Generic Prog >>>>> Avenged Sevenfold

And not just in quality, also in the fun department.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Watching them live with him shouting bits of Constant Motion is just cringeworthy. I hope this sees them getting back to what they should be. Whoever thought Dream Theater had to be heavy?

I don't see this stciking though, I expect him to be back with them before too long.
