Post subject:  Prog Rock Recommendations

I really like bands such as Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd etc. and I'm looking for bands similar to them.

But the problem I'm having is Prog is too broad of a genre for me to find bands with the specific sound I'm looking for.

So, I decided the best course of action would be to ask here for recommendations. If you can help me please speak up.

Mmmm... going to be difficult. You might like Devin Townsend's solo stuff or Damnation style Opeth. I've actually just been getting into Steven Wilson myself. So, maybe I'm not one to recommend prog in that vein. Check out Steven Wilson's solo project if you haven't already.

Sorry for not mentioning what I already have.

I'll post a list:

Devin Townsend
Opeth
Tool
Porcupine Tree
Dream Theater
Pain of Salvation
Pink Floyd

I have heard some people talk about a band called King Crimson, but I don't know if that's the kind of thing I'm looking for. I'll go listen to some of their songs soon.

Yes and 70's Rush is must-haves. I recommend Close to the Edge by Yes and 2112 or Hemispheres by Rush. Then you could check out Early Dark Quarterer which is fantastic as well as King Crimson. Also, try and look up the Italian Focus, though they may be hard to find.

And also - In the court of the crimson king.

Also seconded Rush, specially 2112.

One less known band very interesting is Moon safari.

there's Evergrey, Kamelot, Angra and Communic that are prog on all different levels that might pique your interest,

Since you like Tool you may want to check out A Perfect Circle.

Also some of Arjen Lucassen's projects like Star One or Ayreon.

Riverside may also be what you are looking for. I don't like them myself but they've been getting a lot of praise.

Finally check out Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

What everyone else said, plus Genesis. If you like the more out-there stuff, Captain Beefheart is vital.

I don't see a lot of these being very close to Porcupine Tree. Then again, that is why it is prog.

You'll probably enjoy Camel. Start with the earlier albums, Mirage or The Snow Goose in particular.

The new Riverside is a great CD, very talented band, and for heavier stuff Redemption's Snowfall On Judgement Day is awesome.

Got to agree with Thy Serpent, Shadow Gallery is an excellent example of prog rock/metal. Another good place to look in any of Lana Lane's albums, very progressive feel to most of her music.
