Post subject:  NWOBHM Recommendations, ffs!

I'm gonna jump the bandwagon here and ask for some obscure NWOBHM/Doom recommendations along the lines of these:

Early Maiden
Cloven Hoof
Early Dark Quarterer
Brocas Helm
Witchfinder General
Diamond Head
Pagan Altar

I've been wanting some too. I've heard a lot of Diamond Head recently, and Maiden off your list, but nothing else. So I'll start with your list.

Saracen - Heroes Saints and Fools

Saracen - Vox Excelsis - this is a newer album but is totally amazing. Fans of more modern metal should in theory like this album, it also has plenty of tasty NWOBHM parts.

Tokyo Blade - Midnight Rendezvouz, Night of the Blade

Savage - Loose N Lethal

Praying Mantis - Time Tells No Lies

Deep Machine - only demos are available but this is an Angel Witch/Tokyo Blade Super group.

Gogmaggog - Another NWOBHM super group with Paul Dianno and other ex Iron Maiden members.

Zeus - Spanish NWOBHM get Dama de Hierro, totally fucking awesome

Gotham City - Swedish NWOBHM with Anders Zackrisson from Nocturnal Rites

Ethel the Frog - Beatles/NWOBHM

Incubus - more awesome NWOBHM ala Praying Mantis.

Wildfire - Summer Lightning, Paul Mario Day ex Maiden sings for this band.

Tygers of Pan Tang - Spellbound

Paralex - White Lightning EP

Ritual - Black Widow...

Etc. Etc.

"Across The Line" is a pretty cool song I've come across from a fairly obscure NWOBHM called Hammer - Album title: Contract With Hell (1985). Plenty of keys and very dreamy delivery from the singer.

MA's comment on the song:

Contract With Hell ends with an eight minute detonation of elegance, the slowly spun yet dramatic finale “Across the Line”, one of those strangely epic saddened stirrers that’s lonely in an early ‘80s Whitesnake vibe, cool keyboards coloring it a soft celestial hue while the Glenn Hughes-y vocals of Dog Wilkinson take on an equally rock-anchored Dave Coverdale naturalness - easily a fave track, on the scorched heels of “Caution to the Wind”, sturdy bookends to an album that has a few more tail feathers than its slightly more hardened predecessor.

That Contract with Hell album is weird. THere's only two real NWOBHM classics on it and those are the songs "Contract with Hell" which is absolutely amazing, and "Prayer for a Soldier" which is also extremely excellent. The rest of the album is a mixture of Van Halen and Whitesnake type rockin.....which is unacceptable for a NWOBHM band.

Hammer have the same problem as Wildfire. They have songs that are totally ripping NWOBHM....and then a bunch of pop rockin crap that is in stark contrast to the heavy awesome stuff.

Wildfire consequently is the author of what is in my opinion the best NWOBHM song ever written, "Screaming in the Night." If anyone can find it on youtube I suggest you listen to it as it is one of the top heavy metal tracks ever written.

HT, I remember you introduced me to Angel Witch. Thank you for doing so. I ended up purchasing their s/t. What do you think of Tytan? The band features some Angel Witch members.

I think this band rocks something fierce. Rough Justice is one of those CDs that I can listen from start to finish. They have very good production sound for an early 80's release. Vocalist has a bit of bite, and the sound seems quite progressive (keys, heaviness + melody and hooks). The CD might have a bit too much of a commercial sound for some, but highly recommended anyways.

Pretty solid album. Havnet heard it in a while so I'll have to give it a listen again. But I do remember it rockin quite hard.

It didn't have a whole lot of proper 'heavy metal' to me.

I just discovered a pretty cool NWOBHM tribute band called Roxxcalibur. They just released an album called NWOBHM For Muthas, covering songs from Cloven Hoof, Savage and Witchfinder General to very obscure stuff like Bleak House, JJ's Powerhouse, Radium, Jameson Raid, ARC and so on. Covers are well done and the singer sounds like Hansi Kursch!
