Post subject:  Non-falsetto Power Metal?
I'm looking for some good power metal where the singers can't sing in falsetto. It doesn't matterb how high-pitched they sing, as long as it they don't hit falsetto. Clean vocals please. Incidental falsetto is okay, as long its done every once in a while, like Wizard and Burning Point.

I'm a singer and I'm coming to the conclusion that I'll never be able to sing in falsetto because it sounds like shit. I don't have a hard time singing stuff like Burning Point and Wizard.

Gimme some albums to hear. Remember Layne staley never sang in falsetto, vbut had a high pitched voice, keep that in mind.

I know shit about what classifies something as falsetto but does Mike Scalzi sing in falsetto. I'm thinking he sings in a high pitch just not falsetto. If not then check out Slough Feg.

I think Scalzi has more of a mid range. When Slough Feg did their last show in Michigan they spent the night at my former house, and I remember Scalzi saying something about not singing in falsetto. He's definately more of a mid ranger..but his voice is deeper than most singers. Either way, he has a great singing style...and without a doubt..will not be changing..thankfully.

What about Helstar's Nosferatu (1989)? I think it's a great album and James Rivera one of the finest metal singers around! :dio:

I'm a big fan of this band and it didn't occur to me to think about them. Their singer does go into falsetto every once in awhile, but doesn't use it often.

Comments so far:

Falconer - perfect suggestion, thanks Lucifer's son. It sounds like he uses that quiet soul falsetto underneath his normal tracks sometimes, which is easy to do too. Perfect suggestion.

Jag Panzer - can't find them on myspace nor do they have samples at their site.

Sabaton - Another good pick. I can do anything from "Burnt Offerings", so it'll be about the same story here. Unfortunately, I don't like the music all that much.

Slough Feg - Another good example, but rather throaty. Not into it, thanks anyway though.

Omen - Anbother example of a semi-bark. A little too gritty. I have plenty of stuff like this. Thanks anyway.

Helstar - This is another one I like. He does the halford thing with high ptiched vocals, but that's easy to do, two or three notes isn't hard to do in a style.

Keep em coming, as you can see, i'm not ignoring the suggestions.

It's tough to sing anything if there's an additional falsetto harmonic overdubbed on top of it. It's one thing to sing in a different octave, but singing in 5th's and shit makes it impossible to sing by ear to me. This is the only problem I have singing Alice In Chains. I sing Jerry and Layne's parts, I have to really focus and stay on the lead of the singer I'm doing. It's just too hard to do that with one singer overdubbing another octave on there.

Russell Allen's voice isn't that hard to do, it's just a lot of work to get it right, and frankly I don't like Symphony X *AT THIS POINT* to practice their songs every day until I get them right. Sorry SX fans.

Alright, here's what I learnewd today about voicing's and it may be helpful or at least informational to someone:

There's essentially different kind of voicing in metal that aren't distorted. Here's examples of the singers that use them

1. Head Voice - Layne Staley, geddy lee
2. Middle Voice - Jerry Cantrell
3. Chest Voice - glenn danzig
4. Chest Falsetto - not found in metal, soul music uses this a lot. If you know who go west is, this is what the guy uses when hitting high notes.
5. Middle Falsetto - joacim cans
6. High Falsetto - Midnight, geddy lee

I seem to have problems with middle falsetto only. Extremely high pitched stuff is no problem, nor are any of the other types.

Maybe it's a stupid example, 'though I think he's rather high pitched than a falsetto user but try Michael Kiske/Helloween/Place Vendome. Helloween of course with Kiske not Andi Deris whoes falsetto is easily recognizable.
