I've never really heard anything from Dark Moor but the song titles to this album are beautiful.

Awesome album, really. Bombastic power metal, melodies are flying all over the place. I'm not quite fund of the vocals though.

I haven't given this band enough attention -- all I remember is that they had a girl singer who sounded like a dude.

Is this a good place to start?

No, start with older Dark Moor. "The Gates of Oblivion" or "The Hall of Olden Dreams." And if you want newer Dark Moor, get their self titled one.

But if you want medium-paced neo-classical power metal, that delightful slice of cheese Autumnal is will do the trick nicely!

+1, The Hall of the Olden Dreams is a masterpiece. I usually don't like female vocalists but Elisa is the exception to the rule, she and the girl from Zed Yago :dio:

Does Dark Moor play "generic & predictable" power metal or do they play a bit more "fresh & interesting" type of power metal? :)
If they sound a bit in the vein of Edguy or later Axxis, I'll check it out.

I'm not a fan of female vocals either, but Elisa is definitely the exception, as well as the chick from Triosphere. Check them out if you haven't. Fucking awesome stuff. What band is Zed Yago in?

Zed Yago was a band, dummy!
They released two albums, From Over Yonder (1988) & Pilgrimage (1989) and were often compared to Warlock.

They r a bit different. More in the over-the-top or pompous range, but not quite Rhapsody of Fireish. They bleed a lot of classical stylings and like everyone has stated a lot of atmosphere. The nice thing about Dark Moor is they can manage all of these things while keeping the core structure of songs and the "catchy" factor in tact. They never really fall deep into that proggyness that loses many listeners. The new guy can actually sing if you dont mind the accents. He has a nice soft passionate voice. The choir type vocals help aid him on songs they need more power.

Elisa era Dark Moor is a bit more symphonic and over the top, the new-era Dark Moor remains symphonic but in a more catchy way. Kinda like Nightwish has tried to do with their newest material.

I cant fault a band in wwanting to hown in on their skills and songwriting and they seem to be at work in doing this without losing the roots of the bands early days.

I am 100% sure I will enjoy this!

Autumnal is the best Dark Moor album since Gates of Oblivion. It just feels like they have kicked into a higher gear: better melodies, a bit heavier, just a fresh new feeling. 'For Her' is already one of my songs of the year.
