Drummer Mike Portnoy of the progressive metal giants DREAM THEATER has finished laying down his tracks for the band's new album, due in early 2009 via Roadrunner Records. He says, "Imagine a DREAM THEATER album with 'A Change Of Seasons', 'Octavarium', 'Learning To Live', 'Pull Me Under' and 'The Glass Prison'... all on one album... COULD YOU HANDLE IT?? Excited? I sure am!!!!"

I found Systematic Chaos to be a much more enjoyable DT album then their previous several. Hopefully they can match it with the new album.

x2 it's their best in a while if this new one is as good as SC than we got another great DT album on our hands.

x -5 I thought it was a huge disappointment, stale, and boring.

SC had some of their most straight forward stuff since Train Of Thought, which pleased me greatly. But the rest of the album was filled with meandering garbage. Mixed bag IMO.

Most DT albums are largely meandering. I found SC to be more focused then most DT albums.

A band member hyping the new album? NO WAY

I'm still looking forward to this. I wanna see where they'll go.

I'm kind of hoping for something different. Systematic Chaos was decent but I just felt like I had heard it all before from them.

That's quite a bold statement, I must say. Nonetheless, I'm definitely looking forward to it. Even though Systematic Chaos is probably my least favorite DT album since Awake (Falling Into Infinity I haven't heard yet).

Actually gone off them a bit, enjoying other prog bands much more.

The dark eternal night, Ministry of lost souls and constant motion were all amaing, lets see more of that kind of stuff.

Those all harkened back to classic dream theater but were new and different.

Listening to Systematic Chaos again this morning, I must say that it does sound more like a 90's DT album than their last three did. Perhaps they're moving away from the "heavier" sound they began doing on Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence and back to the lighter prog-metal of their 90's material.

Whereas Awake is heavy too. What they could improve is, that the songs could be a little bit shorter but with more technical shenanigans. :) Maybe like "Under a Glass Moon" or "Learning To Live".

I'm personally sick of all the ridiculously long songs. I also want more of their crazier shit like 6:00, rather than their technical stuff.

??? "6 o clock" is IMO as technical like for example "In the Presence of Enemies Part 1". Just a little bit shorter.

Sometimes I really wonder whether DT's pre-Six Degrees albums really fall under the "metal" category. I've heard full-blown rock bands that are more aggressive/angry (this isn't a knock against DT btw - just an oddity).

From Portnoy's description it could absolutely turn out to be my favorite Dream Theater cd ever. He named three of my favorite DT songs in his description, so my fingers are crossed. I found Systematic Choas to be a bit weak for them so this would be a welcome change for my DT tastes. I can't wait.

DT is one of my favorite bands, so of course I'm excited about a new album. I've enjoyed all their albums, so I have complete faith in them to put out something I'll love. I try not to get too excited though, so then I won't be let down by an album that's really good but not a classic.

Instead of mixing it up, these guys need to move onward; do something new.

And drop that bald guy, dammit.
