Post subject:  Hit Or Miss: Dream Theater - Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence

I bought this album on Amazon.com just today and decided to post a poll about it.

I voted "Hit." I've listened to it several times on Napster and liked it a lot. Interestingly, the symphonics on the album remind me of the music in Final Fantasy Tactics In fact, I wonder if that game's soundtrack was a deliberate influence on the album. Vocally, LaBrie sounds like he's finally coming back into his own, particularly after that oddly gruff performance on Awake - which was supposedly because of his bout with food poisoning. And, of course, there's some amazing musicianship and emotion throughout the album. Typical of DT.

Some consider this to be DT's last real "prog metal" album (which I totally disagree with, but that's beside the point). Even though it was the album that ultimately started DT's "heavier and more modern" sound, which would later be perfected on Train Of Thought. In other words, I like to think of Six Degrees as DT's version of Colony and Train Of Thought as DT's version of Clayman.

Not listened to it yet. Because I loved the first DT I heard so much (I&W) I decided to listen to them chronologically, and am currently on Metropolis pt 2.

The first cd is a bit meh. Glass Prison and Great Debate are awesome. Cd 2 is mighty.... Hit I guess.

Love it. The Glass Prison, The Great Debate and Misunderstood make the first CD amazing. The second CD is a completely different experience, all of the songs are really short and to the point, which is actually a pretty great thing. I honestly don't understand why people wouldn't like Six Degrees, I think it's on the same level as Images and Words, just with a lot more depth.

Big hit. The Glass Prison is what got me into prog.... actually it was a stepping stone into metal for me.

I think that, because of the way Train Of Thought was released less than two years later and got much more attention from the mainstream media, Six Degrees has become somewhat overlooked. Kind of like how the mighty Reign In Blood was released only a year after Hell Awaits, and Hell Awaits has consequentially become the "forgotten Slayer album."

Listened to the full album yesterday, and it's even better than I remembered (though that might be because of the superior CD sound quality). The Glass Prison, The Great Debate, Disappear. All are great songs. And the title track? Wow!

I agree with most here that The Glass Prison, The Great Debate and Misunderstood are the stand out tracks here. Like them alot.

I probably never gave the 2nd disc the time it deserved. But it never made much of an impact.

Plenty of great material here though. Hit.
