Post subject: TOP TEN SONGS' INTRODUCTION TO METAL
PostPosted: Mon Mar 31, 2008 6:33 pm
If you had to sum up metal in ten songs (one for each band) to make a compilation to someone who has never heard a single metal song in his life, what would your "perfect 10" be like ?

I'll start with mine :
    - Iron Maiden "Revelations"
    - Judas Priest "Beyond The Realms Of Death"
    - Metallica "Master Of Puppets"
    - Anthrax "Among The Living"
    - Queensrÿche "Promised Land"
    - Black Sabbath "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath"
    - Deep Purple "Speed King"
    - Thin Lizzy "Roisin Dubh (Black Rose): A Rock Legend"
    - Slayer "South Of Heaven"
    - Blue Öyster Cult "(Don't Fear) The Reaper"

Well, if a person has never listened to any metal song at all, I wouldnt recommend thrash or death metal. I would recommend some basic traditional heavy metal.

Iron Maiden - The Trooper
Judas Priest - Hellion / Electric Eye
Accept - Balls To The Wall
Dio - Rainbow In The Dark
Thin Lizzy - Dedication
Scorpions - Rock You Like a Hurricane
Helloween - I Want Out
Metallica - Enter Sandman
Manowar - Number 1
Ozzy Osbourne - Shot in the Dark

These are far from being the best songs in metal, but they are commercial and radio-friendly enough to get someone's attention. The best stuff would have to be discovered later.

Hummm ... Maybe Wasted Years would be better, yes. After all, it was the song that got me into Maiden ...

If I had to sum up all metal in 10 songs (but not with the purpose of converting someone new to metal), I'd go for:

Judas Priest - Painkiller
Queensryche - The Mission
Manilla Road - The Veils of Negative Existence
Helloween - Eagle Fly Free
Slayer - Raining Blood
Candlemass - Solitude
Bathory - One Rode To Asa Bay
Death - Crystal Mountain
Emperor - Inno A Satana
Behemoth - Decade Of Therion

Here is what mine were

Led zep - Babe I'm gonna leave you
Rush - Subdivisions
Dream Theater - Pull me Under
Strato - Black Diamond
Helloween - Eagle Fly Free
Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name
Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear...
Megadeth - Hanger 18
Dio - Rainbow in the Dark
Sonata - Wolf and Raven

These songs helped me transition to metal. There were, however, many more who helped me into harsh metal.

No offence, but I really can't stand Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Dio! I was under the impression that that was an era that metal fans were hoping to forget. Sorry!!

Noodles?

No, but I understand how you feel. I've got alot of hardcore (which you seem to like) buddies that can't stand metal, especially not the old bands.

Yeah, it's all his fault!! When I come home and he's listening to Judas Priest, he gives me a look like I've caught him masturbating
