I have nothing against the new BG, I can still appreciate a good band but I guess my expectation lie elsewhere (Savage Circus is pretty ok BUT it's still NO BG in their heydays)

Give Persuader a chance. They're not quite on the same level with old BG either, but they're so much better than Savage Circus. Very strong material on their latest, When Eden Burns.

As for the Nightfall debate, I'll say it's a phenomenal album. The interludes that put many people off are probably a lot better apreciated if you've actually read The Silmarillion. Knowing what it's all about gives another dimension to that album.

I'm going home now and try find this new one on Dc++, do you think I have any chance?

I got it, and I'm extremely disapointed.

This is like ANATO part II without the good moments on ANATO. ANATO was a solid if unspectacular album, but still had peaks like Battlefield, And Then There Was Silence, Age Of False Innocence, Precious Jerusalem or Sadly Sings Destiny. This new one is only unspectacular. The musicianship is still top notch, but there is nothing attractive about it. This Will Never End, Skalds And Shadows and Fly are the only ones that rise above a sea of bland choruses, powerless riffs and boring vocal melodies. I can believe I'm listening to BG. It's the first time that this band, one of my top 3 favourites, disapoints me.

Definitely their worst album so far, imo.

It was impossible to top ANATO and NIME anyway, but it's at the same level as IFTOS, imo

I've got the promo version and it's really anoying those "You're listening to the new Blind Guardian CD - A Twist in the Myth" twice in all songs, damn you Nuclear Blast.

Give it more listens dude. "Turn the page" reminds me a lot of "And Then There was Silence." Don't make any quick judgments. This album is killer.

I gave it four consecutive listenings. Three last night, when I got it, one in the morning. And usually I only need one to like a BG album. Doesn't seem to grow. Btw, I know at least 4 people who see it the same way - which is everybody I've discussed it with so far - so I guess I'm not the only one.

Keep in mind I'm not crazy about ANATO either, although I think that album was a lot better. I don't love ANATO, but I respect it, and I can't say that about ATITM.

Turn The Page doesn't remind me of And Then There Was Silence, I actually think And Then There Was Silence is in a whole different league.

I'm curious what others here will say about it, especially Brahm K and Alex.

OK maybe I was exaggerating. "And then there was silence" is probably my favorite song, period

God....this album is so boring. I was disappointed with ANATO, and this just seems to continue the tradition of over produced crap. The big super awesome Choruses are gone.....now the verses have the chorus feel to them. THey are all layered a thousand times in octaves. Hansi very rarely has no effects on his voice which totally ruins the music. The leads suck because lets face it, Blind Guardian leads for the most part all sound the same. They totally ran out of ideas on this one. THis has got to be their worst album to date. Boo them. I never thought I'd be saying this but, fuck you Blind Guardian.

I actually took a break form it so I wouldn't get sick of it. I listened to it non-stop for three days. I might delete it and wait for it to come out.

I always delete them. Even if you love it you'll be less inclined to buy it, you know? I still think the album is great. Didn't I tell Holy_paradox not to try it because he won't like it?

Yeah, it helps if you intend on buying it. I mean, Devin Townsend is one of my favorite artists and I just bought Synchestra about a month ago. The fucking thing came out in January. I just never deleted the album because I listened to it all the time. I should have listened to it a few times and then deleted it.

But it is true, at least with AnATO and I just flat out won't buy this. Honestly though why does a band like BG, that is capable of just playing pure, real Heavy Metal need to layer vocals, use every effect known to man, gay orchestras and all of that stuff? It just stops being Heavy Metal when you do that stuff.

Anyways, thankfully they have a killer back catalogue to listen too.

Did you actually listen to it? This album is extremely stripped down, and there is about 1/3 as much layering as on ANATO. You must be deaf.

I want to strip you down and listen to it with you...

Serious, lets get stripped down and listen to some BG togather.......

You know, these guys are just blowing it by following the Rhapsody (the worst band on the face of the earth) formula. Fuck guys, play Heavy Metal like you know you can.

I won't even waste my time with childish comments like that. if you want to talk music, talk music - although I won't subject myself to another stupid "heavy, loud, and fast is good; all else is bad" debate.

So...is that a no?

I don't think they sound anything like Rhapsody. To suggest so says you don't know either band! Seriously. Each band's version of "symphonic" metal is VERY different from the other. As for this new album, the vocals are layered and have a "big" sound, but this is no ANATO. It's not the same, there are just similarities. Blind Guardian are pushing the envelope, trying to expand and play with their sound. They're still releasing great music, but I can understand why some people would be turned off by their newer style shifts. To suggest they suck now, though, is flat out retarded.

I have to agree with eyesore on this one. I finally got the chance to listen to the album this weekend. While I don't think it's their best work by any means...it is still the BG I know and love. I was worried when I heard "FLY" but the rest of the album seems to have that sound I was looking for.

As far as the layering goes. I look at most of the new symphony metal as art. Obvisouly live, it's not going to have all of that added into it, but when you put together an album you want to put the best product out. I love old school heavy metal as much as anyone, but I also love the new symphonic metal...hell, I play in one. If you're not a fan of symphonic metal...most likely don't expect to like what BG is putting out these days.

I think bands like Rhapsody, Blind Guardian, Symphony X, and many more are taking metal to a different style. I think Orchestral music and metal go together quite well. That doesn't mean that I think every metal band should do it. To me, I think if you can compose a piece of music that combines different styles and genres that really rocks...go with it.

Hmmm... the album was partially what I feared. It's not really a bad album. I mean "Turn the page", "Fly" and "Carry the blessed home" are classic Blind Guardian songs in my mind.
The problem I have is that it's abit too much, the album never really calms down to let the listener catch a break.
That was one thing that NIME did very well in my opinion, partially due to the interludes and partially thanks to the slow songs. It had huge, bombastic passages but also slow parts in between. Large portions of A twist in the myth tends to melt together.

And with the folky melodies gone, the music has a feeling of randomness, as if the songs were improvised.
