Iced Earth did, in fact, make the Billboard Top 200 with The Glorious Burden (#144 I believe). Helloween did too in the late 80s. As well as Nightwish.

Also, what exactly is that "Heatseekers" chart anyway?

there's actually a discussion going on about nightwish and within temptation? it seems to me that it should be very easy... they both suck like hell. I don't like female fronted bands in metal (not to be sexist, i just don't like the female voices) and nightwish and wt are the worst. I don't even talk about evanescence... that's below consideration...
power metal isn't based on homoeroticism!! the singer just sounds like he's had his testicles removed, thats all. but Tony Kakko is amazing...

We could have plenty more, which is very possible. I know how much you'll love that...

You dont like female fronted metal bands, thats fine, but just cause you dont like a females voice doesnt mean their band sucks. Thats just ignorance on your part...

Holy shit, dude, what the hell are you thinking?

Within Temptation's only true decent and consistently good album is their latest one. Nightwish have been churning out masterpieces since Oceanborn (well Century Child may not have been a masterpiece).
Nightwish hold the yard stick in that genre. Within Temptation are good, i like them myself but feel they do kind of cross over to that "pop" sound, but nowhere near as much as Lullacry.
Within Temptation need to improve much more and Nightwish needs to turn into mush before anyone can say WT is better than Nightwish.

As for the topic....

I believe Metallica's "Black Album" may have gotten a fare way into the charts back in '91. Can anyone confirm? I know the post said power metal, but someone mentioned hair metal and mainstream bands...

I quite like Within Temptation. Like Evanescence but good.

Their first album is just a droning gothic snooze-fest from what I remember. Their second is about half good, half uninteresting. The third I haven't heard, but on the basis of the singles, and having the misfortune to see almost the entire tracklist performed live, is just pop-rock dreck. I wouldn't have thought it possible for a band like that to sell out (yes, those two words again), but they managed it.

You know Arthur is laughing his "balls" off at you right now for accusing them of going mainstream right?

I didn't say the bands suck. Nightwish are all good players, but the voice just ruins it for me, I don't know why... At least they got rid of Tarjy now, hope the new singer will be better...

Do you just not like operatic vocals, or female vocals in general? I hate Tarja's voice; I've never gotten into Nightwish as a result, though I quite enjoy Within Temptation.

That is what you wrote...

So the bands are OK, its just the singers you dont like? You could have explained it better in your original post.
I understand how people can be put off by certain female singers voices, but for me those two vocalists sound angelic. I just hope whoever Nightwish choose as their replacement, that they have a damn awesome voice...

yeah sorry that was bad. what i meant was that the voices ruined the otherwise good bands.

After several hours (read: nanoseconds) of agonising I considered it a price worth paying to get my point across.

BWHAHAHahahAHAHAahhaaa!!!!

Oh wait, I could give two shits about any of those bands, plus that's not even what I said.

This doesn't actually say anything, it's just really hard to read.

I'll cotribute to this flame by pointing out there are several female vocalists with tons of more "testicular" voice volume than several of their male colleagues. For instance Federica De Boni (White Skull) vs Kotipelto, Lori Wilde (Black Knight) vs James LaBrie, Kim Gos (Synergy) vs Andre Matos and the list goes on and on!!!

As for Nightwish I really never thought strato-metal with operatic vocals is anything special. I'd rather the bassist focused on Tarrot so they may release another "Spell of Iron". Plus when I watched them live they sounded dreadful, too much keyboards and prerecorded orchestral parts to actually let any guitars sound through, although Tarja's stage presence was more metal than the lot of them! Within Temptation isn't really metal, so I don't know if it counts.

Strato-metal? What Nightwish are you listening to?

Stratovarius does not sound like Nightwish, nor does Nightwish sound like Stratovarius, with or without the operatic vocals....

Bits and pieces on Oceanborn and Wishmaster have obvious Strato influences (see: Crownless).

I was talking more along the lines of pompous euro power with keyboards, and the similar orchestration. The only Nightwish album I have (or rather used to have, because after I watched them live I gave it away), was Wishmaster and there were several strato references in that one, but the operatic vocals do indeed have the ability to "mutate" the entire result. Don't get me wrong, I don't care much for stratovarius either :D
