Yes, I am most definitely closed minded because I don't like Nirvana. Because hey, unless you like every single band to ever exist, you're closed minded, eh?

Nirvana is total crap, if I listen to that kind of "music" I would probably want to commit suicide too.

People who can't acknowledge good songwriting—regardless of whether it's their style of music or not—are close-minded. Sorry.

I say, you like what you like, and if simplicity isn't your style, then enough said. As for Iced Earth, it is mainly the vocals.

No I don't like Nirvana. Not even in my main stream days.

As form my five favorites, that is extremly difficult.

Blind Guardian
Angra
Kiske, Hansen - Helloween
uhhhh....
Gamma Ray

Dude I can't narrow this down. Especially with all the different catagories of metal. Way to many. Especially since I'm listening to a lot of different/new stuff.

Man, your theory astounds me. Good songwriting is subjective. An opinion. There is no set standard for what is good and bad songwriting. Therefore, by your arguements, if you dislike anything that someone else considers good or at least "acknowledge that its good", you are closed minded. Good job.

Nirvana its crap, you got one guy playing suicide music, telling you that life its crap while he "plays" his crappy guitar, crap, crap, crap.

Playing simple not too complicaded music its alright, but playing crap isnt, and nirvana is.

To all you 'close minded inquisitors' nirvana is one of the worse pieces of crap my heathen ears have heard, it was and it is only a hype band.

Seems to me that you have a preference to high pitched power metal singers and thats the reason barlow its not your cup of tea, maybe it will grow on you in time, his voice its a perfect mix between pure evil and melancholy(No pun intended, well maybe a little)you are missing a lot, but hey thats what tastes are for.

You're saying Nirvana sucks, a band that has hundreds of songs. Not one of those songs is good? I understand opinions, but blanket opinions are completely biased and don't validate arguments. They're extremely ignorant.

Firstly, Nirvana does not have hundreds of songs. They have three albums and a few other songs here or there, which does not equal hundreds. Get your facts straight. Secondly, yes, Nirvana do have a song here or there that is all right for a listen once in a while, but that doesn't change the fact that about 95% of their songs suck, and therefore they suck.

Right, damned if you do, damned if you don't. Zakk Wylde gets criticized for not "evolving" much album-to-album even though he puts out an album a year! No one will compare Mafia to Sonic Brew, though, then their argument makes no sense. So they compare Mafia to The Blessed Hellride, the album that came out prior to Mafia (the heavy album, anyway).

Then, of course, he releases Hangover Music Vol. 1 and people complain...it's too different, it's boring, it's not as good as Book Of Shadows, blah, blah, blah.

I understand. It's highly annoying though. I just ask for good music. That's all I care about. Look at AC/DC, same 4 riffs, 900 different songs!! What you play isn't what matters, it's how you play it![/quote]

I think part of what also makes Jon's style more noticable is that he hasn't changed his tone/sound much in the last several years. This goes for Zakk too, I think to some extent. If you listen to old Metallica, James Hetfield used much of the same style during their years as an actual metal band, but the actual guitar tones changed noticably from album to album. Between Kill 'em All and the Black Album, his tones changed with each new release because he was never 100% satisfied with a sound. I think this can mask things to an extent. Jon hasn't done this. While production has improved over the years, the sound from Jon's amp has hardly been altered. He's obviously satisfyed with his sound. This also means though that if he happens to go from a D5 power chord to a B5 power chord in two different songs that are of similar tempo, it will sound the same even if the overall riff is quite different.

I cant believe we have wasted 14 posts talking about a shocking band called Nirvana. That band should never be mentioned in a metal forum, or anywhere else for that matter. 100% of their songs suck, not 95%
Good song-writing? In who's eyes? Who decides whats good and whats not. God, whats next....Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, lol
Lets end this shit about Nirvana and get back on track about Iced Earth....

I also really like Persuader, Wuthering Heights (with and without Patrick Johansson), and Space Odyssey. But what I listed above was more classic power metal acts, or stuff that will become classic in the near future. Even so, there are still to many to name, so that is why I stopped listing.

well, I think those three bands are way better than 99% of Power Metal bands and certainly better than "4th rate Iced Earth"

I lived in Seattle at the time of the big "grunge" invasion, and I had at one time been a fan of some of those bands, but why come in here and attack Iced Earth so coldly in an Iced Earth thread?
