Also, Portnoy, if you wanna talk about "rewriting songs," let's talk about your little commercial for A.A. that spanned for 5 albums, the last song of which features some of the most egregious self-plagarism I've ever heard.

What an ass.

EDIT: One last thing, why would a band who have been sneaking in subtle little references to their other songs and albums for YEARS write songs featuring the same structures if they didn't expect people to pick up on it? Shit, DT fans are some of the most obnoxiously over-analytical fans on the planet. They wouldn't have done something like this if they didn't fully expect fans to pick up on it within a week. Trying to subtly hint that "they were desperate attempts of secretly re-writing the past" is just fucking petty.

OK, it clicked today, finally. Good album, not their best, but a great follow-up to Black Clouds.

This thread is irritating me. I feel like I am missing something with this album. Grmbl.

+1 to Thomas. I'm not too big a fan of BC&SL. Overall it was good, but everything between the first and last songs range from good to total shit. Plus, to me it just represents a band who seemed like they were way past their prime still trying to be relevant. This new album is pretty much the exact opposite of BC&SL.

Going through the album first time right now. So far nothing is standing out as really good stuff on the first try. ToT was last DT album that sounded great to me on the first go. Have listened to On Backs of Angels several times prior and its growing on me. Hopefully other tracks will do the same.
