Eh. I think it's doing a bit of a disservice to the bands to have someone review an album that they most likely won't like. If the album just shows up on your doorstep—which happens all the time—then you sort of have to review it, regardless. But if you've been sampling tracks online and you don't like it, you shouldn't go and review it. That's just nonsense.

That's a good point.
However, negative reviews often save many fans from disappointment. A great example is my Tacere review (rated 1.5/5). There are some metalheads that like the CD, but I know that other metalheads purchased it, only to be completely disappointed by the male vocals. My review (which complained about the male vocals) was unfortunately reviewed long after the CD was released, so I could have saved these other metalheads from disappointment.

I love that Tacere CD!

But seriously, negative reviews happen. I write them, too. But for me, I simply think if a person hears samples and doesn't like them, he or she shouldn't go out of their way to review the album. If they have, they have to, of course. But if they don't have to, and then review it anyway, then they're reviewing it for selfish reasons and not for the fans and bands.

My opinion, of course.

I'm not surprised... there are many mixed feelings on it.

Why would you review this? Clearly you're probably the wrong person to review this album.

Just because he might not like certain things about the CD and it might be a negative review, doesn't mean he shouldn't review it. It's still just an opinion, and there will surely be others that will agree with his review (regardless of whether of not it is a positive or negative one).

That's ridiculous. I am a fan of Nevermore. I have an interest in the Warrell Dane solo album and have been keeping an eye on it's progress for quite a while now. I am in a position to review it. But because I don't like parts of one song I shouldn't bother? Now that is nonsense.

Agreed, you're the right guy to review it... especially having seen Nevermore in concert twice.
One thing's for sure, there's already some drama and hype surrounding your upcoming review.

NP: Awesome symphonic power metal debut a la Rhapsody, Thy Majestie and Divinefire!! Full review coming with the March 14th MCDR site update.

You can stream the whole Dane album here (until 18th): www.myspace.com/warreldane

It's really beautiful music Warrel's giving us, it's already one of my favourites this year. I don't think it resembles Nevermore much, it's not so heavy and the guitar riffage isn't so crushing and complex, but it's still not an easy album, it takes several listenings to get it fully. The vocal lines are just spectacular, I especially like August, This Old Man and Brother, very emotional songs, both music and lyrics wise. Dane might not be the best vocalist out there, but he can well claim to be the most expressive. Great debut.

Going back to the beginning, Nevermore are such a great band. Born came up on my MP3 yesterday and I had to listen to the whole album as a result.

+1. This sounds just like his work with Nevermore except more varied. I especially like how Dane's using the more polished and heavy sound of This Godless Endeavor on this album.

On a side note, am i the only one that doesn't find Nevermore to be that complex? I mean, they're great, but for me DHIADW is a pretty simple album. This Godless Endeavor is more complex though.

I wouldn't say they are more complex then say Necrophagist, but I think for their genre they are one of the most technical.

Technical and complex don't necessarily mean the same thing. Diary Of A Madman by Ozzy Osbourne was a very technical album, but it wasn't very complex (except may be for the title track). Meanwhile, Chaos AD by Sepultura was a very complex album, but low on technicality.

Complexity refers to song arrangement. Technicality refers to instrumental skill. Usually, they're both used together. But not always.

Yeah, that's right.

Rush are the masters of technicality, even when not being complex, ala presto. Take that example if you can't see the differences.
