How come they're unknown if they make the best music ? You're just being silly here !

No. I guarantee you there are at least 50 albums that each person did not listen to that they would have thought were masterpieces.

The trick is going back in time and listening to stuff retroactively and trying to enjoy it as it was meant to be and being objective about music. Most can't do it.

Personally, any album I listen to, I treat like it came out yesterday, I don't make the distinction between old and new, It is either good or it isn't. There is no "1970's standards" in my book. If I say Led Zeppelin are overrated it is because they have ben eclipsed many times over in the songwriting quality department, besides, I wanna hear a metal album, not half a metal album, plus whatever else they were experiemnting with at the time. get it?

Almost every band has a period of greatness that passes.

I disagree, great bands never make bad music unless there some sort of extenuating circumstances (made an album to fulfill a record deal, line-up changes, etc)

No, great bands don't make bad music, but there are almost no bands that had long careers and every release was outstanding. My favorite band is Rush, but while I like every album, there were certain albums that were just brilliant (Power Windows, Permanent Waves, 2112) while others did not live up to thier standards. But, I'll take a bad Rush album over any almost anything any day.

only a handful of my favourite musicians have had long careers, but for those that do the quality is pretty consistently great...

What that says to me is that these bands are in thier prime and will either start being mediocre later on, or will become legendary.

few bands go into category 2

Power metal had its ups and downs this year but I think it ended quite well after the slow, disappointing start. Right now I can't think of that many weak pm albums besides Twilightning (an album which has grown on me but it is still a disappointment), Sonata Arctica, Nocturnal Rites, Elvenking and Ride The Sky. Everything else have been if not excellent still quite good, and i'm not talking about newcomers. I can list at least 10 good albums this year which are in the 80's.

I think all would agree that this is the year of progressive metal. Only this year we got great cd's from Circus Maximus, Pagan's Mind, Dream Theater (not for me but still...), Symphony X, Threshold, Xystus, Darkwater, Spheric Universe Experience, Outworld (I know it's last year but I only recently heard it) and Suspyre. And I'm still behind on the new Mind's Eye, Redemption, Winds and Riverside. Btw, if anyone have an opinion on those four albums please share.

New Winds is really good and Redemption's latest is one of my favourites this year great cd.

I do understand you though I wholly disagree... As you do, I don't treat an album as old or new, just as good or bad... On that we do agree. But I think fame is there for a reason (except for marketing products such as The Spice Girls or Tokyo Hotel, that is). There's a reason why Led Zeppelin became a big name and not, say, Blue Cheer or Foghat : THE QUALITY ! :P

Led Zeppelin became a big hit because of the association with the Yardbirds.

Blue Cheer releeased some very good albums in the 80's that no one cared about. They were very much like Van Halen's sound. I don't know why you think Foghat was not a big name in thier day, but they were.

If quality is the determining factor in popularility and sales, why didn't Pentagram succeed ?

Similarly, Eric Clapton was keeping it a secret that he was involved with Derek and the Dominoes and the album went no where. After a few months and horrible sales, it was revealed who was behind the project and sales skyrocketed and it is now regarded as a classic album. That is the best example I can give for marketing. The only way anyone would have known about Clapton's involvement was if they bought the album and checked the liner notes.

Blue Cheer similar to Van Halen ? In the 80's....  You, obviously, do not know what you're talking about !

And I didn't say that only awesome bands succeeded but I said that big names were here big names a reason...

I know exactly what I'm talking about. The Beast Is Back is the product of Blue Cheer getting themselves a hammer on master virtuoso guitar player.

Avantasia new material even tops Metal Opera and also Helloween and Nightwish releases the best albums ever! The new Axxis was also one of the best they've done. Sure this alone is sure to make it a good year. Powermetal is also getting more mainstream and nightwish topped several charts in europe and the new helloween also broke the top 20 in several countries.

Sonata Arctica and Gamma Ray's albums were unfortunately the biggest disapointments of the year. Stratovarius should also have released an album this year, but there has been no news on that for about a half year and haven't heard much about Timo Tolkki's new metal opus named Sana either which is somewhat disapointing.

Give it more chances. I was disapointed with it the first time around too, but after I've listened to it 5-6 times more I decided it's one of the best albums this year.

You definitely should. It's not quite as easy to get into as Keeper 3 IMO (can't explain why). But once you've listened to it a couple times, it really starts to grow on you.
