So early Metallica was true power metal? Yeah, OK.

Fuck yes they were. You think Kill em All is thrash? Listen to it, you think Ride the Lightining really is? Hell no, is a logical step up from the NWOBHM and what inspired True Power Metal. Hell I think I read some where that Metalica even called their music Power Metal way back when. I would just call it all true Heavy Metal but you all insist on labels for everything. True Power Heavy Metal is not your average Fairyland band. Sorry but it isn't, no matter if ever person on Metal Reviews says it is, it isn't.

Why should I have to give up on my opinion and follow the herd? I don't understand why everyone has to think alike for it to be considered intelligent and openminded?

You know, you've got a point. Early Sodom's Power Metal too!

This guy's an idiot.

Idiot or not at least I heard a Sodom album probably 20 years before you did so can base some judgment on what I would call them from something other then the internet and what other people tell me I should call them....

I know people that swear up and down Sodom is 1st wave Black or Death Metal and not thrash at all.

Yes, to very distinct style of Trad Heavy Metal, the US, heavier epic style or the Helloween "speed" metal style, up to you which one you want to call Power, me I am going to go with the first one. Sorry if that offends anyone.

It's not that (they both are!), but how in the name of god is early Metallica not thrash?

Was there even thrash in 82? Did anyone call it that? When you bought the album in 82 or 83 was it thrash to you? When you heard Hit the light on the first Metal Massacre LP was it "thrash", and you said look a new thrash band is out? When you saw them open for Raven in 82 did you call it thrash? I sure didn't, I called it really Heavy fucking Metal. Something to think about and maybe you can get my point some?

Honestly, 82, when you bought tickets to see them open for Raven on the flyers did it say "new thrash band from CA"?

If not then forget it.....

All I know is I never even hear the term thrash until around 86 or so. So Metallica was never really that to me. the first real thrash stuff to me was Slayer and some other shit.

So then what is your point if I don't refer to them as such? Keep in mind Fairyland is not the be all end all of Power Metal to me as well.

I wouldnt call Kill Em All thrash myself.... it simply doesnt thrashes, compared to Bonded By Blood for example.

I'd call it heavy metal, or speed metal, or heavy/speed, whatever it is it's heavy metal. Similar bands in that time would be Exciter, Living Death, Slayer's Show No Mercy etc.

I would call early Sodom as black metal, but i can call it speed metal also. Is Mercyful Fate black metal ? Is Witchfinder General doom metal ? Is Sarcofago thrash metal ? Forcing these band into categories is kinda pointless, it has nothing to do with the actual greatness of the music.

Though I do have a problem when people try to force their retarded genre opinions on me.... like one time some dude tried arguing with me Beherit, Blasphemy and VON as 'war metal', while having the nerve of calling Burzum 'true black metal'.

I totally agree with this post 100 percent. I don't know wtf "War Metal" is but if Beherit isn't 100 percent true, "I hate the entire fucking world and if you listen to my fucking albums I am going to make you pay for it" Black fucking Metal I don't know what is.

Maybe I should just go back to calling everything Heavy Metal except for shit that clearly isn't and letting it go. It is pointless.

Kill 'em All isn't thrash Metal, is a foundation for it and something later bands (Exodus) built on.

Listen to Angel Witch and Diamond Head and Dianno Maiden, then Kill 'em All. It is a natural progression of Heavy Metal.

Anyways, I saw them with Raven in 82, they blew my fucking mind and so did Raven, I actually found All for one before I got Metallica though. Heavy Metal just couldn't be played like this, then I back tracked too the British shit which was impossible to find outside of Raven, Saxon and Maiden and it is all history.

yup! Kill Em All sounds like a natural progression of Holocaust, Savage, Diamond Head, and then inject the speed metal influences of Motorhead, and especially Venom. Speed metal existed first before thrash.. and both are often combined, hence the term speed/thrash. Still people cant seem to tell the difference between the two.... and Bonded By Blood is a fine example of 100% pure thrash

Beherit is definately black metal... only wimps cant take them. lol

If people can hold such misconceptions about Beherit, so can they the same for power metal. People should just form their own opinions by digging and listening to the bands mentioned themselves instead of relying on popular opinions dictated by trendies. Not specifically directed to anyone here though

A good site that supports old school and modern 'old school' metal would be metalcrypt.com. Currently their frontpage alone has reviews for Brocas Helm and Black Knight. Killer interviews with Pagan Altar, Countess and more too. Excellent METAL site !

Have you been paying attention? Metallica are traditional US metal, not thrash, not speed, not power. They were metal.

How the fuck did this get on whether or not Metallica was thrash? Leeeee, you suggested Metallica was fucking power metal, but now you agree with oktakon that Metallica were heavy metal? Have you forgotten your own argument? Are they heavy metal or power metal? And yes, there is a difference.

Kill em All is definitely thrash metal. It's way closer to Bonded by Blood than to early Exciter. Exciter sounds like Motorhead with a screaming guy on vocals, and that's speed metal to me. Bonded By Blood sounds like Kill em All with the vocals a bit harsher. Venom's Black Metal is a foundation for thrash, Kill'em All is the first thrash album( with Show no Mercy). All that, imo, of course.
