Dont ever force it. When I first got into metal I hated Savatage the first time I heard them. I liked many similar bands at the time and didnt understand it. 2 years later i had my cd collection playing on random and a Savatage song came on. I fuckin loved it. They are now one of my fave bands. Both old and new stuff. Sometimes you are just not ready for what some bands have to offer, but its all about timing. That is why evn if i hate a band at first lesson i never take them out of the mix and i rarely skip songs when playing on shuffle. i find "new" shit to listen too just by giving things i bought years ago a fresh chance on random play. If you try to like them you never will.

Do you listen to mostly power metal and if you do, do you listen to aggressive darker power metal or the "helloween, edguy type"?

I don't like Blind Guardian AND Dream Theater, so I win.

I must say that I'm really sattisfied by the amount and diversity of opinions that I got until now. Even though I haven't answered for almost a week, I was checking this a few times per day.

So far it would seem that the responses fall into one of the following 3 categories:
- Some came up saying that they don't like BG like me but not necessarily for the same reasons
- Some say I should not care about not liking BG, should definetely NOT force it and I should listen to anything else that I like
- And some say that maybe I could start from their earliest works or even forget about it for now and wait until the right moment (I will know when that is).

I thank you for all the opinions. The main reason behind this post was that I had the feeling that I was missing something that is really worth the effort and got a bit panicky. But I think after all I will stick to your suggestion and just leave it for the moment. There are thousands more bands to listen and like (or ignore if it's required).

I first heard Blind Guardian in '99, the Middle Earth album. Since then I've given them every chance I can to appeal to me, but they don't. The production sucks on everything I've heard and Hansi's voice is mostly like fingernails on a chalkboard to me.

There are some songs BG/or Demons and Wizards that I liked, but for the most part I'm not interested.

Well although Blind Guardian from the day they released Battallions has gone through many changes, they've always had their trademark sound to an extent. It's always there, and it's kind of distinct. Sometimes you're just annoyed by a band and you can't help it, it might go away with time and you'll be able to look at the music with new eyes without any prejudice. Don't abandon Guardian alltogether, but put them on the shelf for awhile.

Personally I think they slay :dio:

I seem to have the same problem. I love Demons & Wizards, but i just cant get into BG as much as i want to. I have their latest album, where only around 2, maybe 3 songs appealed to me. And i only like a handful of songs from their "Nightfall in Middle-Earth" and "A Night At The Opera" albums.

I cant workout why i cant get into them. Hansi voice is great, but on some tracks he just plain blows. Or it could be the music on some tracks.

I havent heard much BG apart from those 3 albums. Maybe their 1st few albums when their sound was a tad different may apeal to me more.....

Try Imaginations From The Other Side or Somewhere Far Beyond. Those are best to begin with, imo.
