I'm listening to this right now and let me tell you this isn't Invictus part 2. Not by a long shot.

I can only pray to all Defeis' Gods that this is not a finalized version. Songs seem good, but wtf? The keyboard is the main instrument, very much in front, while the guitars are barely audible and lack strength and energy. Defeis' voice is not what it can be either. There's some very good material here but it's being completely ruined by this softcore production.

I would be horribly disapointed but there's a glimpse of hope from their homepage:

ANNOUNCEMENT:
We can proudly announce that The New VIRGIN STEELE album is finally done! Those of you who already received the Promo copies, please kindly understand that this was not the final finished version. It has now been finalized, and is complete and much stronger, and heavier than what appeared on the Promo version. And yes... it will be released on September 8th. Stay tuned here for a Synopsis of this Work in the days ahead.

We thank you sincerely for your understanding, belief and support...

I really really hope this mp3 I have was made from one of those unfinalized promos. Otherwise would be tragic.

If that's the case then I'll wait until Sept.

The production is rather crude, but I'm not worried. Virgin Steele isn't known for having a poor production on their albums. Defeis has also in recent interviews described this album as being a "Extremely Heavy, Moody And Melodic". The songs are great though.

The new release from my all-time favorite band, and I didn't comment on it? Impossible :D :D :D

Ok, let's go...

Pros:

- Unbelievable vocals (as usual)
- Great compositions, complex but catchy
- Some moments (intro to The Hidden God) convey the extreme brutality!
- The atmosphere is really over-the-top

Cons:

- The fuckin' sound! Still I hope that it would be fixed in the full, final version...
- Some minor repetitions from the earlier albums

Generaly it seems that we have another great epic album...Well, it's not perhaps on the Marriage, or Atreus' level, but still it's pure Virgin Steele!!! Incredible Symphonic Rock (heh, is it still METAL? ;)) It's really more "romantic" in a way than barbaric. The balance was shifted and that's why it's different from the other VS albums...

Can't wait for the premiere!!! By the Gods!!!

Highlights: the opener, Black Light On Black, Angel of Death, God Above God, When Dusk Fell, The Hidden God

The production has gotten a face lift it seems, can't wait to the 8th.

No. The production is the same here and on the promo CD.

Unfortunately the drums on the album were done on the electronic drum kit due to financial problems. Well, it doesn't sound bad, but it's a pity they hadn't been recorded on a standard kit :/

Can't wait to the 8th too!!! :D :D :D

Seeing as the 8th is here, I'm wondering if anyone has gotten their hands on a copy... I would really like to know how improved the production is. The promo was a little weak as far as the strength of the sound, but otherwise one of the better albums I've ever heard.

I've got the copy since the 8th. It sounds better than the promo, but still something is missing...The guitars sound better, but it's still a keyboard-oriented album. Most of the stuff is played by Dave. Even the guitar solos. Bass is played on keys, Josh Block does 7string guitars, Ed doesn't play in two songs :?

Despite all that, it's still the great album!!! :D

I just couldn't get into this album. Invictus and House of Atreus II are so much better that this one is completely shadowed.

DEFIANCE, DEFIANCE, A GOD OR A MAN, I CHALLENGE YOUR POWER , YOUR HONOR, YOUR STAND!
