Led Zeppelin is metal to me. There's palm muting and down picking on the song Communication Breakdown. Dazed and Confused is a Doom Metal song, so is NO Quarter. Ten Years Gone and Achilles Last stand from Presence both have the kind of Epic harmonies that would become Power Metal trademarks. Don't be mistaken, Zeppelin were a lot of things...including a heavy metal band. I would have put Deep Purple on the list......but I didnt.

And we're not even talking here songs like Immigrant Song and Whole Lotta Love, which ARE heavy metal, no matter what anyone thinks.

Speaking strictly of heavy/power/prog, and trying to limit myself to only one album per band (except for Priest where I can't do it )right now I'd choose:

1. Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime
2. Judas Priest - Sad Wings Of Destiny/Painkiller
4. Blind Guardian - Imaginations From The Other Side
5. Virgin Steele - The Marriage Of Heaven & Hell Part II

6. Iron Maiden - Seventh Son Of The Seventh Son
7. Helloween - Keeper II
8. Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black
9. Kamelot - The Black Halo
10. Manowar - Sign Of The Hammer

11. Rage - Trapped!
12. Bruce Dickinson - The Chemical Wedding
13. WASP - The Crimson Idol
14. Scanner - Mental Rezervation
15. Crimson Glory - Transcendence

16. Ayreon - The Universal Migrator
17. Accept - Balls To The Wall
18. Primal Fear - Seven Seals
19. Shadow Gallery - Tyranny
20. Demons & Wizards - s/t

Zepplien isn't Metal, 2 or 3 songs have some characteristics but is not worth arguing as long as you agree that Edguy is much more Metal then Led Zep who I hate. Hell the Who is as metal as Led Zep if we want to that route and so is Hendrix. I don't even know what palm muting is.....sounds like something you would do to a kid to shut him up.....

I like seeing scorpions "lovedrive" on your list. Been one of my favorite bands since I was 16. Also been listening to metal for about 20 years :)
Though the last couple of scorps albums kinda bored me. They need to stick to ballads i guess.

This is very tough for me because I have over 1000 cds. 800+ being metal. If this list is for metal i will leave it at power/prog/traditional and get back with a response. Need some time to think about it. I know for sure that
Edguy- Vain Glory Opera will be in my top 20 and I did not see it on anybodys list? Regardless of what the band has done of late that album is flawless from top to bottom with the perfect mix of metal and ballads :)

Led Zeppelin does a lot of stuff that is very metal.....I wouldnt consider them 100% metal, but just because of their greatness, I can make exceptions for them. They can go on a metal list....at least mine. I was going to put Rainbow on there too.

Fair enough....... Stairway to Heaven invented the whole slow build up thing (Which was brought to the Metal world correctly by Priest with Beyond the Realms of Death) and is still a staple today.

I quit them after Love at First Sting. I am pretty sure I bought the one after that but it reeked. Lovedrive, Animal Magnetism and Blackout are the shit. I am not a huge fan of their Virgin Killer type stuff.

Aerosmith's Dream On is also a good example of slow build up song.

BTW, Led Zep are more metal than Edguy!!!!

I find In Trance and Fly to the Rainbow to be the best Scorpions albums. Hands down.
