Probably my favorite straight (no not THAT "straight") flower-metal band of all time. No one has the knack for melody that Tony Kakko has, no one I tells ya!

Silence is definitely the one to get next, it's my favorite SA release whereas Ecliptica is the second one on my list. WHG is very much recommended too, although not quite as consistent. Reckoning Night was my disappointment of 2004...I dunno what happened, I say Tony must've run out of good ideas there for a while. Well not completely, but I still say that album is for the absolute die-hard Sonata fan only. "Blinded No More" for example is just total crap.

I'm the other way around. I'm not a die-hard fan, but I like Reckoning Night because I find the previous releases too light on the guitar mix.

Sonata Arctica = bad Stratovarius ripoff.
Stratovarius = bad Helloween ripoff.

Get Reckoning Night next, no matter what these guys tell you or how many times MetalNess pukes on himself.

Agreed. Three bands that sound nothing alike. Oh wait, they do all have guitars and drums. Nevermind, he's right!

I do agree that Blinded No More sucks, but the rest of the album is good.

A Stratovarius ripoff??? They do sound somewhat like Stratovarius on their first couple of albums, but they definitely don't anymore, and if Stratovarius is a Helloween ripoff, then so is nearly every other power metal band.

I find Blinded No More to be one of the better tracks from Reckoning Night. Ain't Your Fairytale is the worse song on the album for me.It sucks so much that I always skip it.

I don't know why it took me so long to realise that there was only a year between WG and RN. Hopefully the dip in quality on the last album was down to it being a little rushed, but the cynic in me thinks not.

I happened over Winterheart's Guild a while back, shortly after it came out, and fell in love with it.

Eventually I made my way to the other releases as well, but maybe I took too long or something because they never really did much for me.

Being inspired/influenced by is alot different than ripping someone off. I'm not a big fan of Stratovarius, but even I can tell they do quite a bit different than Helloween. yes, much is also the same, but that's what happens when a genre is formed by the influence of a band.

The main difference when I compare SA to Stratovarius is the fact that Stratovarius is more guitar riff oriented and in your face.

SA is more power chord with singing melodies for most of their songs, with guitar being out of your face.

To me, I'm the opposite as most. I think their 4th release is their best. Their first and 2nd have some awesome songs, but they feel too much like a copycat band of the "Stratovarius" style. I however got into SA with their 2nd album - and I liked it but it seemed to much like other power metal at the time.

Their 3rd album they drifted from that, but thats where they lost the guitars being an important part of the song. A good album, but I still don't listen to it that much

The 4th they brought guitars back, didn't write typical power metal speed songs (1st album), and did some awesome chorus and vocal work. Plus, the melodies were as strong as ever

Don't Say a Word and White Pearl, Black Oceans (Might be the best song they've done) are jewels on that album

A good band for sure! To me, I like they way they've progressed. And I've always loved their ballads - especially when you realize some of the back stories of their songs. The lyrics are always one of their best qualities.

Example - if you learn the story of "Draw Me" and why it was written, that song becomes so much more powerful. With the pause and everything. It can make sense without knowing the story, but if you learn the truth behind it - it's a stunning piece

I can understand how huge fans of their first albums would be turned off, but I like this albums disregard for standard power metal ideas, particularly with the guitars.

The main difference between Stratovarius and SA is that Stratovarius is crap, while SA is a talented band(even if they're not very metal)

Well, you seem to dislike or disagree with most of the stuff I like, and the other way around.
