It's Dream Theater. It has good parts, and then the rest is dull.

Hit miles better then Octavarium as was James Labrie's Elements of Persuasion which was awesome. As I Am is a great opening tracks and it's probably the last DT cd that I actually liked all of it. JP is amazing they all know their stuff but he stands out seeing them live he just blew me away.

I think it's definitely a hit, but their best? I don't think so. Scenes from a Memory, Systematic Chaos, Images and Words and even Octavarium are IMO better.

TOT is a great Thrash Album, but for Dream Theater it's a little bit monotone. It's lacking great solos, great melodies, the "softer" songs, the varied songs and so on.

For what it is - it's great, but for a Dream Theater album it's IMO only in the second row because I'm expecting a little bit more.

I'm a big DT fan and I know what I'm talking about. And in the end it's all a matter of taste.

If you only like Thrash, then it will be your favourite DT album, but if you expect progressive metal, then other DT records are just a little bit more sophisticated and a little bit more DT.

I'm on the same boat with TMW316 here. His reasoning in the previous post also applies and is valid for me. I got to know and loved Dream Theater playing stuff like Images & Words or Awake. So, for me, anything that strays too far from that style was/is a miss.

I agree in Scenes from a memory (my fav), Images & Words & Awake being better than this one. But ToT is in pair with Systematic Chaos and Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence, and far better than the dull and boring Octavarium.

Uhh... also ToT is not a thrash album. It may be thrashY at times, but it is not a thrash album.

Musically, I think this is top notch as they push their skills to the extreme. But sometimes this is not a very entertaining listen at all.

Huge hit for me. Used to be my favorite album ever before I was exposed to more stuff. I like every song (including Honor thy Father), although Vacant usually gets the skip (on a side note, I was disappointed that they performed Vacant from ToT for the Score DVD as opposed to one of the better songs). Still killer. I didn't even notice the rapping until I read about it on this site. Octavarium was definitely worse than this, the title track is awesome but the rest of the album is forgettable.

Hm, "Octavarium" - the song - is great, "The root of all evil" and "Panic Attack" are in the heavy TOT league, "The Answer lies within", "Never Enough" and "I walk beside you" are great Pop-Rocker and "These Walls" and "Sacrificed Sons" are good if you are in the "Six Degrees of inner turbulence" mood.

I find Octavarium really underrated, only Sacrificed Sons falls short of the mark. Actually, I think it'd be more fitting of a poll than Train Of Thought!

^Agreed.

Sacrificed Sons mauls balls though. The only song I think is forgettable is These Walls.

I don't see why so many people have a problem with Octavarium. Root Of All Evil, in particular, is one of my favorite DT songs. But I like pretty much every song on the album.

For me, the hardest DT album to get into has been Awake. I don't know why, but the songs just don't sound as memorable to me as the songs on other DT albums. I'm also somewhat bothered by James LeBrie's style of singing on the album (very "growly"). Even on Images And Words, he sounded more like his conventional self.

Agree about the awake thing.. The production sucks too... the guitarsound is awful.. Some of the songs are good though, like Lie, Etromania and Voices.

Octavarium is dull. I like toor of all evil, these walls and sacrificed sons. THe rest just never clicks.I walk beside you must be the most boring song they have ever written.

Wow, people have very different opinions on Dream Theater. I hate their three recent albums, but love their other work. I think Awake is my favourite one, it has a lot of variety in its songs. Also, 6:00 is some of the best stuff they've done.

Fucking awesome album, it's really heavy with some utterly killer riffing and shredding, as well as some awesome lyrics (As I Am).

Seriously? but then again, you like dragonforce:P

Hit. Barely. I don't think LaBrie's voice fits very well with the music. The rapping sucks, and the solos are so insanely shit at somtimes, it hurts. But the riffs on this album is fucking awesome, so are the solos that fits. the musician-ship of these fellas is stunning.
