Pretty good advice, really. You could probably skip No Prayer For the Dying and Virtual XI, those two albums are rather uninspired for Maiden.

Virtual XI may be uninspired (those repetitions in the songs that won't stop !!!! ) but NPFTD is not. There are several excellent songs on it: Public Enema Nr.1 , Run Silent,Run Deep, title track, Mother Russia, Fates Warning, Holy Smoke, Bring your Daughter... The weaker songs are Hooks In You (co-written by Adrian Smith!) and maybe Tailgunner and The Assasin, but they're still solid. And this being the first album for Janick, he still played pretty serious, without his gimmicks and butchering of solos. The only disadvantages this album had is that it followed the masterpiece called Seventh Son, that Adrian was not on-board anymore, that it wasn't the comeback album the band hoped it to be to the rawer style of POM and Powerslave, that Bruce changed his vocal delivery to a grittier, rawer style and that the songs lenght was adjusted for the 90's. :) :) :) hehehehe.

I can't believe you're recomending FOTD before 7th Son.

Well, I think 7th Son has not aged too well...

I don't know for the rest of you but I think that A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH is also lame album.

Here's how I rate the albums :

1. IRON MAIDEN 95/100
2. SOMEWHERE IN TIME 85/100
3. FEAR OF THE DARK 80/100
4. 7TH SON 75/100
5. BRAVE NEW WORLD 70/100
6. NO PRAYER FOR THE DYING 65/100
7. A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH 50/100
8. X FACTOR 50/100
9. DANCE OF DEATH 45/100
10. VIRTUAL XI 35/100

As you can see, I don't consider the last four of the list to be essentials...

I guess Powerslave , Piece Of Mind and Number Of The Beast get less than 35/100 in your ratings, since you dont even mention them!

Oh, and your ratings? No, no, no, no, no, no, 5000 times NO !!!

Now that second leg of your ratings was more reasonable ...

How come Maiden fans never go on about Alexander the Great? What an awesome song!

Yeah, that song is one of my absolute favourites... They've never played it live... Shame.

You guys are really serious ?

Alexander the Great is fine but it hardly compares with other Maiden epics of the 80's...

I don't think it's the best one but it's absolutely awesome and seems to be forgotten about. The only fault I have is that awesome guitar part at 4:40 doesn't get fully exploited, so luckily it's followed by some of Maiden's best ever solos. :dio:

Alexander the Great is bloody awesome. All right, its no Rime of the Ancient Mariner, but its up there with To Tame a Land and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son.

I happen to think Seventh Son is an amazing album. Who would of thought that Maiden would take the prog route, and excell!! Infinite Dreams has got to be one of the greatest songs ever. The Evil that Men do is comparably awesome. The other songs are great as well, plenty of atmosphere and awesome mysticality. Great album.

I've had Seventh Son for a few months and I would agree on its amazing awesomeness. I'm just kinda scared that I'll be disappointed with their other stuff because this is seriously one of the best albums ever.
