The Dogma, their debut Black Roses in particular. It's a bit hard to describe their sound, but think something like symphonic power metal with a somewhat goth atmosphere, and at the same time featuring surprisingly heavy and prominent riffage. Clearly a power metal sound, but they don't directly remind me of any other band in particular. One of the most original and fresh-sounding power metal acts in the business right now, although their second album is considerably more generic. I did a pretty extensive review of the debut at metal-archives if you're interested.

Finntroll!

If you like Elvenking, you will like these guys, although it's not really progressive. They sing in Swedish.

Assailant. Agressive power metal. A little thrashy and "deathy" and progressive, too. Singer sometimes sounds the David from Disturbed. Killer band, though.

The Lord Weird Slough Feg/Slough Feg/Hammers of Misfortune - Just listen, awesome combination of styles

I strongly second this motion

also listen to Bible of the Devil - The Diabolical Procession, they give a punky/sloppy side to heavy metal

How come tons of people recommend things the person never asked for in recommendation threads?

OK, thoughts so far:

I've found Evergrey's first two albums quite cheap and bagged them.

Kiuas I like, but their albums seem a little hard to find relatively inexpensive. I'll keep looking...

Secret Sphere - Like it! Will have a look...

Timeless Miracle - Liked the MySpace samples, found album for a pittance on Amazon.

And I have a Virgin Steele album somewhere (House Of Atreus pt 2 possibly) and it's great, and I have a DGM promo kicking around for their last one. Not bad, a bit Dream Theatery though...

Thanks to all for replies so far, will work my way through the list!

I'm glad you like it. And there is nothing wrong to download an album, sample it and then decide whether you should buy it or not. :)

Evergrey's first two albums although good pale in comparison with the two I mentioned before. Recreation Day and The Inner Circle is where Evergrey mastered their style.

I'm beginning to realise that! All very well being krieg and anti-downloading, but if at the end of the day there's simply nowhere to put all the CDs, makes more sense to download, even if you do miss out on the complete experience.

Oh well, too late now. I'll take them in order...

I HAVE to download.

It's impossible to find this stuff in the States. All the crap in CD stores here is nu, rap, and especially country down in the south. If I do happen to find the CD though, I will buy it to support the artist, because I know if everyone was like me, there'd be no new CDs!

EDIT: If you must download, or you download to sample, bitTorrent is the best way; all top quality music--no fuzzy sounds or weak drums.

I know, I live in Omaha. Do you think I found my Forest of Fog collection at the Best Buy we have? I can't even find the latest Blind Guardian CD close by. I order eveyrthing.

By the way Zad. Check out Adagio too. I know you are probably overwhelmed with music right now, but this band is exactly what you are looking for. Harsh vocals mixed with power metal vocals. Very dark stuff. I'd check out Dominate by them.

Yea that's totally true. Forgive my ignorance. I still have no income though (one year off legal working age).

Mercenary are great so +1 on Adam's recommendation. They are one of my all time fav. bands actually. They've gone through some changes in their career - death metal (1st album); melodic death (2nd album); prog/power with some melodeath (3rd and best album); power metal (4th album; screams only no death vocals) and back to basic melodeath in their latest album coming out next month. :D Except their first album which I can't stand everything else is excelent imo.

Woah, cool band, I'd never heard of them.

+1. Although they're really more melodic death metal than power metal. And I think he might have heard them too.

He has heard them, and likes it. And Kiuas really kick ass, so there's one good thing to come of it all. :)

Steal money from your mother like the rest of us did at your age! Or get a frickin' paper route. I had one of those when I was like 12. Then go to Goodwill shops or Salvation Army stores or pawn shops or flea markets. I've found tons of rare CDs at these places for like $0.25!
