Wintermute, that is an excellent observation. The Prophet Song is my favorite Queen song, and consequently the most epic in my opinion. Achilles Last Stand by Led Zeppelin has the same qualities. In fact, Led Zeppelin, Queen, and the early Scorpions all had this inate ability to write long epic songs that have a very serious and haunting quality to them. Indeed, those songs to me, along with Rainbow's Stargazer, are the template for the epic heavy metal bands that came later. Sabbath too had something to do with it, but Sabbath was much less mystical than these bands were.

Achilles Last Stand is my second favorte Zep tune, (Immigrant Song still is the best).
But you are correct about the epic haunting quality, especially the guitar fade out .
Another awesome Rainbow tune is A Light In The Black, in fact Rising is spinning in my player right now.
Early Sabbath may have been less mystical, but the tone was probably the heaviest around at the time.... Into The Void, War Pigs, Under The Sun... to these young ears (at the time!) the plodding sound of Sabbath was like a meteor heading straight for the Earth.
Sabbath will always be the first for sheer heaviness.

This post remember me old times, when my "In trance" disc (vinyl) ended scratched by the first side's excessive play.

Dark lady, In trance, Life's like a river, Top of the bill, living & dying...
These 5 songs, in this order, are part of my live.

Robot Man is a great song as well.

This brings me to another point. Taken by Force is also an amazing album.

I have heard that their latest album is a bit towards a darker and heavier side. That true? I am considering picking it up.

I have heard that. I also heard one of the songs on the radio and thought it was pretty damn good.

I thought we were all sick of Holy Terrors shit years ago? That said, he does know his metal, but I'm kind of surprised to hear him laud the Scorpions.

Speak for yourself. Holy Terror provides excellent music discussion. And its pretty unsurprising he likes Scorpions.

I dunno, I could have sworn a year or two ago Holy_Terror was a hardcore thrash and underground black metal fan who shat on everything else. I've never really seen Holy_Terror do a whole lot than start gigantic shitstorms because someone doesn't agree with him, or because he presents his opinions like a spoiled 12 year old.

And I have a really high tolerance for immature prickery, seeing as I am one.

Indeed.

And, I've just realized I don't think I've ever heard this song, I should give it a try. Thanks for the advice H_T!

Holy shit man. Have I offended you in some way with this post to deserve such a shit slagging?

Not at all. Just my observations from lurking the forums over the past few years. I actually find the shitstorms hilarious.

If you had really been observing, you'd find that the "shitstorms" you're referring are nonexistent in HT's case. Don't mistake a strong, and sometimes crass, opinion as a shitstorm.

Of course, your last few posts have shown that you haven't been paying any attention, be it to his musical taste, demeanor, or otherwise. If you had, you would know that he is actually a huge fan of classic metal (ala The Scorpions). You would also find that he sparks a lot of worthwhile discussion. I'm not saying that I haven't taken a run at him in the past, but his attitude has changed alot in my opinion, so your dragging up two year old posts serve essentially no purpose. I'm getting a little sick of people taking jabs at someone, and then playing the "Well, I was just making an observation" card. Cut the bullshit. Either discuss the topic at hand or don't, but keep the petty insults ERRR I mean "observations" to yourself.

This song is utterly amazing. 1976 and the power metal emotional ballad type song had already been perfected. This song puts all modern heavy metal bands to shame. This is quite possibly one of the most glorious songs ever written. I wish I had a link to the song because I know some power metal fanboy is going to disagree with me. Listen to the song first, somehow, please, before you decide to disagree with me. If you've heard the song already (The Voice, Radagast, etc) then I welcome you're opinion.

Great song from a great album(In Trance), from a great year(75) in seventies heavy rock scene ,with some great albums:

Led Zeppelin-Physical Graffitti
Black Sabbath-Sabotage
Rainbow-1st
Uriah Heep-Return to Fantasy
Queen-A Night at the Opera
UFO-Force It
Deep Purple-Come Taste the Band
Thin Lizzy-Fighting
Rush-Caress of Steel and Fly By Night
Ted Nugent-1st
Aerosmith-Toys in the Attic

you're right, it was 1975, and I'm glad you included Thin Lizzy's "Fighting" in your list. It is my favorite Thin Lizzy album and I am a firm believer that if this album had never been made, Iron Maiden would not exist. The song "Suicide" pretty much invented the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

I have over 3000 cds mostly metal. This shit is badass, timeless and ranks very high if i was forced to rank all the music I have ever heard in my lifetime. Early scorps simply kicks ass. New stuff not bad either, but there is something very unique and original about the earlier works, almost like they did not have a corporate push leading them in a certain direction. Songwriting ranks high in the rock/metal community no doubt. I like the fact they could do only ballad type songs and they would all turn out great. Fly to the Rainbow is a classic rock/power metal roots type song as well.

Wow. After checking out all those youtube videos. These guys are just as good now if not better at all of their older material live. I saw them years ago in the 80s and i remember being blown away how well they duplicated the studio stuff. these guys have to in the mid 50s and are tight as well. They still sound uncanny on pictured life, speedys coming at the last wacken they appeard in. I am thoroughly impressed. Thanks to holy-terror i think im gonna put my modern stuff aside for a while and swap the cds out of my auto for a while! Simply classic!
