AND Ken wasn't using a smiley, so he can't have been joking, can he?

As we have seen in the other thread, smileys are worthless when people are insistent on arguing.

Holy_Terror is my nigga.

I do believe Power Metal is of US origin, PM came out as a mix of Heavy Metal and Thrash, like Metal Church, Jag Panzer, Titan Force, Omen, Cirith Ungol, Virgin Steel, etc. but i do think Stratovarius, Hammerfall, Edguy, Sonata Arctica and the others are Power Metal too, (maybe Melodic Power Metal?) even if they sound completly different than the "true" PM bands, of course that leads to a misbelief that PM is all "flowery" and gay and whatever. a good example would be Gamma Ray, they may have little in common with the US PM bands, but they are PM, Heavenly on the other hand have some similarities with Gamma Ray, shouldnt heavenly be consider PM even if they are more flowery, gayer or whatever than Gamma Ray?, In the end, labels sucks, they are not perfect, so the real discussion should have been that Stratovarius sucks donkey balls not that Stratovarius isnt Power Metal.

Just for the record i also like Edguy, some Stratovarius and some Hammerfall, just not as much as Virgin Steele, early Jag Panzer, Metal Church, etc.

I like Hammerfall (they are just 80's trad Metal and have more in common with first two Dokken albums and some Accept then being remotely close to Power Metal). Early Edguy is cool.

What Voice said is all I am saying, too many people thing Power Metal isn't heavy and is all happy, when true Power Metal is heavy and dark. Listen to Tad Morose.....that is Power Metal to me.

As for Primal Fear, I have their last 3 albums only. I don't have the God one, but who knows what they are tlaking about, maybe Heaven to them is going up in a space ship or some shit?

I definetely think bands like Gamma Ray, Iron Saviour, Blind Guardian etc are Power Metal as well. I never said the whole Finnish thing wasn't, I said it isn't a true representative of the genre and people that are turned off by it should check out some True, Heavy PM.

This is all fair enough, but are you saying that the melodic/symphonic branch of power metal is so different to the traditional style that it should be broken off into its own genre? Stratovarius aren't a million miles away from Gamma Ray, who in turn aren't too far from US-style stuff. Its just natural evolution. For example, Sonata Arctica are even further away from the Jag Panzer style stuff, but are very close to Stratovarius. Think of it like the branches on a tree growing further apart as it gets bigger - its still all connected.

Exactly. You (leeeeee) might just find some of those branches unappealing to you, which is fine.

Yes, same branches, I have said that all along, just want people to be aware there is a trunk to the PM tree, not just offshoots and braches.

That's not what you said earlier:

stop thinking Power/Heavy Metal is Startovarious. (sic)

Anyway do you honestly think anyone on this forum believes symphonic power metal is the be all and end all and doens't know anything about the Grave Digger/Brainstorm/Iced Earth style? You'd be wrong.

I do when they tell me that is not Power Metal but only has Power metal "elements" and refuses to tell me why.

but shit man, if we are going to call Avenged Sevenfold PM then fucking Stratovarious is the end all be all to Power Metal.

I just heard some of the most refreshing power metal in years. It's the debut album of Finnish band Terasbetoni - Metallitotuus.

It's all in Finnish but is rocks! Catchy as hell with awesome vocals.

You guys must check them out.

Teräsbetoni have become incredibly popular here in Finland, even among the non-metal listeners. They get lots of radio play and are one of the most wellknown metalbands in Finland currently. Their success have obviously gained them some hate from metalfans. That happens everytime metalband reaches certain popularity-level.

I like them. They are especially catchy and Jarkko Ahola is one of the best metal vocalist of whole Finland. Even most of the guys disliking Teräsbetoni admit that Ahola has great voice. Their second album is released soon, it´s called "Vaadimme metallia". Once again sung in Finnish, though that´s one of main reasons for their success in their homeland. I´m actually pretty curious what those who don´t understand Finnish think about their music.
