Eh. I think it's doing a bit of a disservice to the bands to have someone review an album that they most likely won't like. If the album just shows up on your doorstep—which happens all the time—then you sort of have to review it, regardless. But if you've been sampling tracks online and you don't like it, you shouldn't go and review it. That's just nonsense.
That's a good point.
However, negative reviews often save many fans from disappointment. A great example is my Tacere review (rated 1.5/5). There are some metalheads that like the CD, but I know that other metalheads purchased it, only to be completely disappointed by the male vocals. My review (which complained about the male vocals) was unfortunately reviewed long after the CD was released, so I could have saved these other metalheads from disappointment.
I love that Tacere CD!
But seriously, negative reviews happen. I write them, too. But for me, I simply think if a person hears samples and doesn't like them, he or she shouldn't go out of their way to review the album. If they have, they have to, of course. But if they don't have to, and then review it anyway, then they're reviewing it for selfish reasons and not for the fans and bands.
My opinion, of course.
