ANGRA are one of the most technical power metal bands to me they are like Helloween meets Dream Theater not so much sound wise but technical ability.

By Jag Panzer 've got Mechanized Warfare and it's damn good, exactly my bag so to say. I will check out Casting the Stones as i've promised myself i need more albums by them. This might be exactly what i'm looking for come to think of it, as i've heard from other sources aswell they've gotten more complicated lately.

Don't forget Thane To The Throne, it may well be their best.

I'd add the recommendation of two Scanner albums: Ball Of The Damned and Mental Reservation. Complex and powerful.

Btw, how come nobody said Nevermore?

Just good traditional heavy metal with some modern power metal elements, IMO. They are pretty technical though (for power metal).

What about Nevermore?

It also depends on what kind of technicality someone is looking for. With the more progressive bands, there's often that virtuoso, masturbatory technical performance by individual musicians. Some PM has these elements (like Angra). Some PM bands are really technical in their arrangements without being as over-the-top when it comes to individual performances. Many BG songs for example are extremely complex in how the music is arranged. While a particular riff or lead may not be very difficult to learn, gaining a full understanding of how all the elements are arranged to attain a specific response from the listener can be more consuming.

This is not to mean that a keyboard player adding orchestration over a guitar riff or two guitars playing a melody line in harmony are necessarily complex arrangements (although some are, and some of the more generic PM bands would have us think this is always so). I'm speaking more about bands that creatively and intelligently combine all of the elements to create an emotive depth of sound.

Admittadly it's kind of vague, but i think i've managed to narrow it down enough that it isn't useless to try suggesting fitting bands.

This post should sift a few bands out:
Quote:
Not exactly, since im most certainly NOT looking for bands like Pagan's Mind and Circus Maximus etc. I figured since there are technical death and thrash metal that aren't really prog at the same time there must be power metal that fit that description too. A lot of prog/power bands are technical but their sound is usually very prog oriented, borrowing elements from Dream Theater etc. and use loads of keyboards/piano. Basically they aren't as speedy and straightforward as power metal either. What i'm looking for is the basic speed/power metal formula with just a hint more of complex musicianship and technicality. Stuff like Winterfell.

I'd also like to add to this (in case it was hard to realize it from the context) that the lyrical themes should be those more reminscent of power metal aswell, and not odd proggish outerworldly themes. This should narrow it down further aswell, as most prog/power bands don't exactly deal with the more easily comprehendable killing-the-dragon themes.

Great band to check out, but I've always thought of them more as thrashy heavy metal with some power elements than pure power metal, and it sounds like power metal is what he's looking for.

WUTHERING HEIGHTS... The last 2 albums: The Shadow Cabinet and Far From The Maddening Crowd are perfect examples and very technical with A LOT going on in the music and not crossing over into Prog ( although admittedly anything THAT twisting, complex and technical could be considered prog :):):) )

The first 2 albums: Within and To Travel For Evermore are more Prog with the latter beginning to cross into PM territory.

I really recomend this band to you!

Check out Jacob's Dream. I have one album of theirs, Theater Of War and it's absolutely brilliant ! The vocalist is a touch "girlie", but he's amazing. One of the best vocalists out there.
