Great review. This is far too raw for me but hell, this is probably THE black metal classic if there ever was one.

You didn't make it sound nearly as good as it is. I'm sorry, but spening that much time on Freezing Moon makes it sound like the rest of the album is not intresting.

Though, this is easliy one of the best metal albums ever made and the definitive black metal album. Perfect from start to finish.

Honestly I've never been a great fan of Mayhem; although this album is good and it is most definitley a classic, I prefer a lot of classic albums like Transilvanian Hunger, Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, Filosofem, Pure Holocaust and Nemesis Divina. But yeah, it sure is a classic.

I'm so very sorry I didn't live up to your expectations. I shall now slit my wrists in despair.

Besides, I disagree. Fingernails could easily ruin some of the better stuff on it. If Dead was pulling vocal duties, it would be the best black metal album ever.

The definitive black metal album is two pronged- Hvis Lyset Tar Oss and In The Nightside Eclipse.

De Mysteriis is very important as well, but not as vital. Deathcrush and Live in Leipzig were more crucial to the genre's development.

Very true. But it's definitive because, in my opinion, it sums up what black metal is at heart. Not because it's the most important black metal release. Though, it's still not my favorite black metal album. I do agree with Deathkvlt that Transylvanian Hunger and Hvis Lyset Tar Oss are better albums.

But I still think that the album is greater than Freezing Moon and listening to songs just to have knowledge they exist. Funeral Fog, Buried by Time and Dust, and From the Dark Past are all near perfect songs. The rest are great, some are lacking(like Pagan Fears, in my opinion), but they're all very good songs.

I guess this is going nowhere, and the most I'm doing is complaining about your "Killing Songs" comment.

Why do people like Transylvanian Hunger so much? I had it, didn't care for it much. :\

Maybe because the production was horrible, at least on the one I had.

I'm gonna listen to it again, Maybe I'll like it this time, since I'm more into BM now. x_

Definitive Black Metal is Ulver's Nattens Madrigal.

A near perfect album... the only irredeemable quality being Atilla's vox.
Strange, his voice sounds a lot different with Tormentor.
I have to say that I disapprove of lowering the bass in the mix, Varg's basslines are a major part of the oppressive atmosphere
created on this album; I always liked that distorted grinding bass!
I bought the tape back in the mid-nineties, and the CD about a year ago, and you can really hear the difference.
Excellent choice for a classic!
Hails!

100/100 here. This is probably the only album that I can say, without a doubt, I will listen to at least once a week. Hell, I think I'm even one of the few people that I've seen that actually enjoys Attila's vocals rather than just tollerate them.

This isn't the best BM album around that's for sure , it's not even close. But overall it's a very good solid BM album in it's purest form. I guess it deserves to be called a classic. Cause after all these years it still kicks ass!

DMDS is decent, I'd give it an 78-80 rating.

Ulver's Bergtatt, Darkthrone's A Blaze in the Northern Sky, Satyricon's Dark Medieval Times, Emperor's In the Nightside Eclipse, and Burzum's Hvis Lyset Tar Oss are far better examples of the best from that time and place.

That said, Freezing Moon is pretty awesome.

Why such a low score?
I find the atmosphere very dark and vaguely oppressive, as if recorded in some dark and ancient dungeon, deep below the ground... not to mention the skinsmanship of Herr Hellhammer.
I give it a solid 90/100, but then again this is one of the first true Black metal albums I heard, so there is a definite nostalgic influence to be factored in.
