Got this the other day, it's amazing. Only heard it once, I don't want to rush it. There's an almost religious artefact-type feel to it for me. Incredible stuff.

The Oath bleeding into Ye Entrancemperium is one of the most awesome transitions of all. Someone new to emperor would hear the the Oath and think they were some kind of bombastic goth-rock band and then they get shocked by the sudden sheer heaviness.

This album was posted for sale on Century Media's website for $5!! By the time I scoured enough change out of my couch, they were sold out.

Damn it all to hell!!

Guess I'll scour for more and buy it full price somewhere else.

With Strength I Burn is one of the coolest tracks by Emperor ever.

They did that last year too. Keep checking the site again, they sold out real fast last year and restocked.

Well after the curious intro and the clean singing it well explodes.
The only two black metal bands I have purchased material from is Emperor and Immortal. i am more of an Exodus type thrash man.
I still don't 'get' black metal but can appreciate genius at work when I hear it.
It has many various moods and the blasts while impressive are not over-bearing within the majestic song structure.
Its all a swirling inferno at times but its got its appeal.
Black metal breakdowns abound.
I hope i offend no one with my rather naive comments on this curious genre of metal but these guys produce the goods.
Any other recommendations for the black metal neophyte.
I really dig the Immortal stuff. Sons of Northern Darkness would make a top 10 for me of all time. It just seems a little more direct then Emperor. Regards.

In my humble opinion, Both kinda suck.

As for black metal, try:

Taake - Nattestid
Nargaroth - Rasluka Part II
Ulver - Nattens Madrigal
Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Satyricon - Nemesis Divina
Darkthrone - Transylvanian Hunger

For a start (in that order).

While your recommendations are excellent, I humbly disagree.

Suck is a bit harsh. But both are definitely overrated... The recommendations however are good since they represent different 'kinds' of black metal (and are all extremely good releases).

Nice list. But when you say black thrash you have to say Tormentor - Anno Domini... Excellent

You have to be kiding... play it again at max volume; I'm doing so now and it still amazes me as much as before.

This album is godly and no album in all BM history will be able to touch it.

seriously, I don't even think it's Emperor's best album... IMO, IX Equilibrium slays it easily !

Speaking of IX, do you pronounce it "icks" or "nine"? It's doin' me head in.

I don't recommend your recommendations. They are all fine, but they are not a good entry point for someone new to black metal. Nattens Madrigal is way too harsh to be third in that row, as is Transilvanian Hunger.

Satyricon is a very good recommendation though, as Nemesis Divina reminded me of Emperor here and there.
