I don't know why everybody calls this Black Metal.
It has some Black Metal elements, true; but, that's all.
It's way too layered, way too polished and it is nowhere near being dark enough.
It's the beginning of the path away from Black metal, into the territory of "hybrid " metal.
I waited for over a year for this to be released, and I remember being a bit disappointed.
Still, it's a decent album made by top-notch musicians.

I can see where you're coming from, but I wouldn't say this for Anthems so much as IX Equilibrium, which imho is where Emperor really lost it. Anthems was an important album in the development of post-black metal, and yet is still quite 'black' as far as I'm concerned. Depends on your definition of BM at the end of the day...
