Never got into Bathory, but this might be one of the few that I have given an extended listen to and I think I vaguely remember enjoying it?

One of the greatest Metal albums ever recorded.

It's amazing that for such a raw sounding album, the songs are all so distinctive and, dare I say, catchy.

1. Scandinavia comprises Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark, and possibly other countries/territories that I'm not aware of. NOT just Sweden.

2. It's Quorthon, not Quorthron.

Those nitpicks aside, solid review of a classic album.

 I even looked up his name to make sure I was spelling it right yet still made the error...twice. Thanks for catching my Scandanavian failure. My intentions were "Swedish" but had a major brain fart when I started writing.

I'm generally not a fan of noisy black metal but Bathory rocks, a classic for sure.

And I'm gonna nitpick the nitpicking: Scandinavia is just Sweden, Norway and Denmark, not Finland or any other countries.

Bathory was one of the first extreme/black metal bands I ever got into. It's just one of those albums that you have to be in the mood to listen to though. I still prefer his Viking Metal albums over all else, especially Hammerheart!

Finland is a bit different in that also has a Russian/Eastern European heritage as well as a Nordic/Western European one.

Finnish language is also not based on same basis as Swedish/Danish/Norwegian though it does borrow bits (just like English borrows French and other bits).

talk about Finland and the rest of the Nordics,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAl9OyGYxOg

anyway, about the album. i just can't listen to it, it's too raw sounding for me. i feel that it's a 'had to have been there' listen for people like me. i understand its significance but can't appreciate it musically.

i like Blood Fire Death, songs can get a bit too long (i don't like long songs) but there are so many awesome moments there, and even Requiem, where the songs are a bit samey but with some damn good riffing going on.

mucho respect for Bathory and Quorthon.

How can you not like long songs? Long songs usually take you on an epic ride, and are the ones that usually stay with you months/years after getting into an album.

I can see not liking long songs if you have ADD or something, but metal was built on long epic songs. War Pigs.

War Pigs is too long for me :P

unless it's live, anything over like 6 minutes or so is too much, and even then it's pushing it. many bands manage to squeeze in a ton of content and feeling into relatively short songs, so why you'd need 10+ minutes to get a point across is beyond me.

obviously i like some longer songs but it's fairly rare in my case.

You should give Sleeps Dopesmoker a listen.

It was a joke. Dopesmoker is 1 song, 65 minutes long.

I like this, but it hasn't really aged well. Still, it is a milestone album.

It never really lived up to it's predecessors, ie, Welcome To Hell, Black Metal, Morbid Tales, etc. as far as I'm concerned.
I still get an adrenaline rush when blasting Black Metal, not so much with this.
