I actually bought Surfing, Rising Force and Passion and Warfare at the same time.

I didn't like this album. I thought it was boring and not in the "I don't have the note tolerance for it so it doesn't sound melodic" sense.

IDK why but Satch and Vai have never been very appealing to me despite loving every note YJM has played.

Do you really want anyone to answer that on this forum?

Seriously I like YJM but I also appreciate what Satch and Vai have done over the years to help pioneer the guitar.

I can definitely see this point of view. Out of the three, Satch has the biggest tendency to have sound like a "backing track" just so that he can solo over it. This album in my opinion has the least of this. Vai can fall into that trap as well, but he has a more expressive sound. Yngwie has a sound that you either like from the beginning or don't. I do like his work, but can get my fill off of only an album or two. I don't need to hear his entire body of work to hear his entire body of talent.

I beg to differ, Satch has an uncanny ability to write catchy guitar licks, he has a great sense of melody and more direct rocking style than Vai or Malmsteen, that IMO makes him more easy to listen than the others, and although i preffer Vai's style of playing i cant help to smile everytime i hear one of the upbeat Satch tunes, you can clearly hear he's having fun.

i definitely think that he has a great sense of melody etc. what i meant is that many songs of his sound like backdrops with the lead guitar as the main focal point 100% of the time. vai is more willing to use the other instruments as a team effort and create music that doesn't necessarily always focus on the lead guitar. is this a bad thing? nah, like you said, Satch is the most rockin of the three and that musical style lends itself to this. either way, its fantastic stuff

Was given this as a gift from a friend of the family when he found out I was interested in playing the guitar...

Awesome CD, personally I like Midnight and the more "rocking" tracks more than, say, Always With Me Always With You and the ballady songs.

My favorite Satriani track is still probably "The Extremist", though.

Classic? Sure. Satriani's best? I don't think so.
The Extremist should have his classic review too for it's the best thing Bald Joe ever released.

Probably the best musician of the modern era - I remember people being in absolute dismay when they saw Randy Rhodes play live - and what sticks with me is that the general theme was pretty much "how in the fuck can he do that " refering to Rhodes ability to
play his studio work live which entailed playing the notes of 2 or 3 guitar parts all at once.

Never got to see Randy play live but that rare dismay is seen at Satriani shows time and again . Musical Badass.
