Crazy, man. This and 2112 are essential, everything else is great to mediocre. Read my reviews for in-depth guidance.

Agreed! 2112 is a must for anyone who even remotely has interest in prog. My personal favorite remains Hemispheres, though. Probably because it was my first Rush album.

You can get all the albums up to Hold Your Fire (1987). After that, the quality lowers though there are still good things to be found.

Fucking right, really have to check this album out now. Being a (relatively) new metalhead sucks cause there's so much shit you have to hear and there aren't enough hours in the day.

Don't count out any of their albums, really. Everything they've done is great. Vapor Trails has a terrible overall sound, so that would be the last thing i would persue.

Every album is touted by a proportional amount of their fans as being their best. That really says everything. Listen to any one of them, if you like their sense of melody, then you will like all their albums. If you are listening to Rush for "riffs" then I think you've got the wrong band. If you are a fan of any pop music you are going to love them. If you have to have it hard and heavy, this isn't your band.

Here is a genre breakdown:

1974 - Hard Rock
(Like Thin Lizzy and Led Zeppelin)
1975-1982 - Progressive Hard Rock
1982-1984 - Progressive Rock / New Wave / Pop
1985-1989 - Pop / Avante Garde / New Wave / Rock (Pop/Rock)
1991 - Pop / Hard Rock / Avante Garde
1993 - Current - Hard Rock with slight Pop elements
