Excellent review, Zadman. Brilliant album, especially Firth of Fifth is divine beyond belief. The ever expanding keyboard-solo section with the polyrhythmics is pure audio orgasm all the way. Do Lamb next or otherwise I will

Although I must highly disagree with your closing statement of forgiving the band for it's 80s period. Invisible Touch, the selftitled and especially Duke are monstrously great records (don't care about Abacab personally). You can't say that Turn It On Again doesn't tickle your trousers. C'mon, a mega hit that goes primarily in 13/4-time. 13/4-time :D !!!

Excellent choice for a classic! Firth of Fifth....simply amazing! This is one of my most favorite Genesis albums of the Peter Gabrial era, if not, any era of Genesis!

I would always think highly of Dancing With The Moonlit Knight and Firth Of Fifth, but not much of the rest of the album. Last time I listened to it, the album opened up a bit more as a whole. I need to listen to it again.

My father is obsessed with this album... I however like my prog rock a little more fucked up.

Here we go again.

Anyway, This is the only Genesis album that I've really gotten into. Dancing with the Moonlit Knight is my favourite.

I do love this album. Battle of Epping Forest, Moonlit Knight, Firth of Fifth, Cinema Show... All of those are perfect songs. Though sorry Zad, More Fool Me is just boring.

Progressive is progressive, and it's worth the mention on any metal reviews site.

I'm saddened to say, I haven't heard a single note of this album, let alone Genesis. Yet again, I might've on the radio without knowing it. Anyways, I'll buy it ASAP!

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums.

Do so, dude. You'll love it.

And thanks all, for the comments, looks like I'm going to have to revisit the 80s Genesis again!

You should try it again then although I'd have to disagree about the "influence on Gospel" thingy... Sure Gospel is a great band but I don't hear any 70's Genesis in their music.
That said, Selling England by the Pound is a great album (except for More Fool Me), one worth a little effort.

Peter Gabriel sings for this one.

Best Genesis album period!! I bought this a couple of years after it came out. As a very impressionable teenager at the time, it just blew me away. I still love the flow of this album and Cinema Show is pure magic with both Peter Gabriel and keyboardist Tony Banks at their absolute best. A true masterpiece of prog rock that still finds it's way into my regular listening schedule. Any Genesis fan's collection is NOT complete without this album!!

Everyone seems to think this is the best Genesis album.

Honestly, it's my least favourite of the Gabriel era (which is the only era I like).

It's a toss up between 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' and 'Foxtrot', but the best Genesis is definitely one of those two, for my money.
