I stongly disagree (I'll not play the "I was there" card on that one Aaron  )

MOP is still the landmark for how quality thrash should sound... that and Coroner's Punishment For Decadence...

NP
Metallica "Master of Puppets" (I was 15 y o the first time I heard that... alost 20 years later this still blows my mind...)

Happy you're not playing that card (but you are, anyway, in a little way), but you're still wrong.

There are nine or whereabouts other thrash LPs that definitely outrank this in terms of progression of the genre, and dozens that are better.

Who said it was thrash? At the time I remember we called it speed metal cause it was like, faster than Priest.

There really is nothing thrashy about it other than the speed at which it's played.

This album is not speed metal, it's thrash. Metallica were inarguably a thrash band from RtL-...AJFA.

If we assume it's speed metal, there are loads of speed metal albums better than this anyway.

what you have to understand Aaron is that back then (before the big thrash explosion of 1987) some used to have difficulties telling what was thrash and what was speed metal... silly, I know, but I remember the press saying either Anthrax, Megadeth, Exodus, Slayer or, indeed, Metallica were speed metal... that was between 1983 and 1987...

I'm aware of that, but Diomedes was saying that this album actually is speed metal, which is ludicrous.

well, I think Diomedes is another quite an old timer... that would explain his little mistake

Yep, the use of the term 'speed metal' eventually died out despite a bunch of ignorant metalheads who insisted on using it.

Nowhere near a classic album. although deffinatly their best album imo it still is completely blown out of proportion as a "classic" of the genre :lame:

It doesn't matter how much you hate this; there's no way it isn't a classic!

I have to agree with him. Ride the Lightning is wayyyy better than this album. This album is entirely overrated, and if it wasn't for Orion, I would never, ever listen to it. It's boring, and every song goes on way too long.

I'm not a big fan of this album at all. It has it's moments though-I just mean for the sheer impact it had on emtal and how many other people do love it; It's just a classic of the genre.

it's not my favourite Metallica album, but some of Metallica's best songs are in it - damage inc., master of puppets, sanitarium and battery. to be honest i'm not a fan of the rest but those 4 songs are excellent.

i said it before and i'll say it again, THIS ALBUM [I]IS[/B] A CLASSIC!

Of course it is a classic, if it isn't you are too young, or just trying to be cool dissing Metallica or something....jeez. No debate on this, ever.

Exactly, how can anyone deny the fucking awesomeness of this album? It's probably the most influential metal album. OK, so it might not be the most brutal thrash record ever released, but the songwriting, the lyrics, the solos everything is of the highest order. Although to be honest I'm prefering ...AJFA these days but that's only because I've played this to death.
