Ok Ken, I've got to ask why you think this is a 50? Have you listened to the album from start to finish? I'm really surprised by your underscore as I know you like some of the newer stoner rock bands like The Sword and Priestess and Wolfmother is much better in my opinion..... 8)

You shouldn't worrry, this influences are extremely minimal.

Anybody noticed the intro to Joker & Thief sounds like a riff right
out of Soundgarden's Rusty Cage ?

It's alright, kind of old QOTSA with a bit more Zep. Singer's a bit annoying, too indie-y.

Overall, not bad at all.

Not good.

This is why I don't like this album. I paid $6.99 for it after I didn't like the samples I'd heard and my opinion didn't change. The best comparison is Jet meets The Darkness meets The White Stripes, the latter two mainly for the vocals. At the end of the day, though, I feel that it's too similar in scope with bands like Jet and The Darkness; the band is in the right place, but they're too content with being "retro" than actually being good. Just because you may be a throwback band (of sorts), doesn't mean you're good. They lack the passion and the quality songs of those bands and that era they're trying to emulate or pay tribute to or whatever.

Verdict: Middle of the road. Mediocre. 50/100.

I can see what you mean, having heard more since. Not as good as the hype...

is the band responsible for the hype ? :?

I think it's good, it's not great but it's a good 1rst album (please, do remember this is just a 1rst album!)... I'd give it a 70/100 and i'm expecting these guys to produce even better music in the future. 8)

No, but...

Even so, still not what they're cranked up to be. The Sword are better.

When I first heard the songs it felt retro in a cool Witchcraft way rather than in a crappy WS kind of way, and that's why I bought it. But with hindsight, yes, it does sound waaaay too close to the White Stripes at times.

I find it to be more like Jet than Witchcraft.

I hear more White Stripes than Jet, but the Deep Purple/Zep and Sabbathy influences are much more predominant.

exactly !
plus a few hints of Uriah Heep & Hawkwing... this is a 70's rock feast, that's what it is... 8)
and I think it's silly to compare them with another revival bands when the originals are clearly the roots of their music

Indeed, that's why I probably wouldn't buy it again if I had a time machine. I fucking hate Jet.

But still, this album is OK... it's not like I'm angry at myself for buying it or anything.

First off i think the music is ok, but nothing special 65/100

But the thing that annoys me about these guys if the fact that they have been hyped over many similar, better bands (no fault of the band themselves though). I other words it annoys me to see mediocrity hailed as genius which is what the (british) music press are doing. It seems somehow wrong to me. But its only an opinion

Right, OK. I think 50/100 is accurate. $6.99 isn't a bad price for it, but I'd say it's worth more like $5.
