they've nevr been my cup of tea, I even used to hate them... They were the perfect blend of so-called metal made for the masses... Would any good ever come from this gutless band (actually, i heard their music was pretty good before Final Countdown but i never bothered listenning  )...

well, i've just seen your review  and i have to disagree... :P except for the mellower tracks (such as the lame "Hero" ) it's a fair modern hard rock album those swedish posers gave us there... well crafted guitar riffs, good voice, good rythm section, very few leading keyboards... 2 thirds of the album are worth a listen, an excellent score for an Europe album...

 try it !

I dont agree :)

I really think this album is a lot better than expected! When I heard that Europe were going to make a new CD I was rather horrified.. However, I decided to forget all I previously knew about Europe and just try to listen to it without expectation, or rather: kind of expecting it to suck.. But its really quite good. Not the best album I ve ever heard but it deserves far higher scores than the low ones you ve given it!

Seems from your review that you are seriously expecting them to sound like they did in the mid '80s, if you only got that out of your mind you d realize this album is well worth listening to!

I can understand that it is easy to percieve my point like this from the reviw. But I must deny that I expected the band to sound exactly the same. Im all for changes and evolution in sound - AS long as the changes dont turn to crap. because I am also a firm believer in the fact that when it comes to music, "Change just for the sake of change is not necessarily a good thing."

My only serious point regarding the 80s with Europe is simply that the 80s tunes are much more memorable, catchy and plain better than anything on Start From The Dark. I give huge respect for the guys for experimenting and really trying to branch out, but that doesnt mean that I like an album at the same time.

Well said. I would have never expected Europe to release another Final Countdown in 2004, just like I would not expect Helloween to release another Keepers album in 2004. Keeping that in mind, I still expect something good. Different is fine, but at the end of the day, it must be good. This album is serile & boring modern rock to my ears. Nothing makes me want to listen to this album again. As a fan of melodic hard rock and metal in general, I would have been pretty pissed if I spent $15 on this album instead of something else.
