You do well to emphasize the lineup stability of PL vs MDB, really remarkable to keep 4/5ths of a lineup intact over 30 years, and I think their Finnish child prodigy (great fills on Devil Embraced) has admirably shored up their one glaring weakness. Gregor Mackintosh has always been one of my favorite guitarists, as the tone he got on his leads on Gothic got me into doom metal as much as anything else, and as you pointed out here the solos stand out like on Forsaken and Ending Days. Hope Dies Young is really the only track on the album that loses me but then Ravenghast is the perfect type of closer for doom. The Old Earth is still my favorite track this year from the two old titans but overall PL have released a more complete album than MDB (This gets a 78, whereas I gave MDB a 73). Never thought I'd see the day where I wrote that, but credit to these guys for being so consistent in recent years.

Also nice to see Obsidian charted at #32 in the UK, a solid accomplishment for such an aged doom band (beating out Charli XCX by one spot, suck it popsters!)
