I went in expecting this to be worse than it actually was, so I'm not that disappointed here. I don't mind the softer parts even though they've never been my favorite aspect of their sound (Angel and Dark River being good enough to get away with it) but on the second half of tracks like Tired of Tears or The Long Black Land the music just wanders away without being interesting, and To Outlive the Gods never gets dynamic, even the violin parts, while charming, are just too reminiscent of past works. As you noted, experiments like Thorn of Wisdom and I Celebrate Your Skin are greatly missed here, nothing is as heavy as Within a Sleeping Forest.

The Dreadful Hours, Songs of Darkness, Barghest O Whitby, and Map of All Our Failures were the only four recordings where Hamish Glencross and Shaun Steels both joined Andrew and Aaron, which gave that lineup a 100% on the good MDB vs bad MDB scorecard. Now that Hamish and Shaun are firmly established in their rival band Godthrymm which released an album a month before this, I think both duos are competent apart but at their best together.
