This album really needed the hook that Behemoth's use of contrast gives them. Behemoth is willing to slow down or let Nergal's vocals get catchy in a way that makes them such an awesome band. It's not because they're brutal, which helps, but because they are fun songwriters. This album was great but relentless in how it barrages you, only letting up in order to create an atmosphere. One which doesn't necessarily draw you in, but simply provides a relief from the blasting. What I personally love about Behemoth is how they can do that, as in Alas Lord is Upon Me which drops into that doom-y bit, but more importantly the catchy moments in Slaves Shall Serve and As Above So Below, for example.

Should these guys be relentlessly compared to Behemoth? No. But damn, given how similar they sound its important to pinpoint the difference where the one band is one of my favorites while the other rarely ever gets a second play from me. Better than Vader though in terms of Pols who growl.

Are there hooks here that I'm simply missing in not giving the album tons of play?

I agree on the whole "we should, but shouldn't compare them to Behemoth." In that, we've got two similar bands with similar songs and similar atmospheres from the same country. That being said, I don't think Hate rely on their vocals too much, and maybe distinguished themselves here as a more relentless act. I think Behemoth have a leg up as they still will, but Hate are a force that people need to spin in their player. Behemoth is very catchy, but I could see Hate being even better live.
