Early and not as refined as the later stuff but still a damn fine album. Nice to see a review up for it.

This is the first SYL album I heard and owned. I might pull this guy out for this week's playlist.

I wasn't quite as impressed with City as I was with Alien, partly being that Alien had a far more gigantic array of sound behind it. I have yet to hear this album however, and it being Townsend's first with SYL I'm sure its rawer than City.

Exciter cover? Solid album way more industrial than any other SYL releases.

very much influenced by fear factory this one was. listen to old fear factory (soul of a new machine and demanufacture) to get an idea where devy's original influence was. Very good album but not quite his own sound yet.

This album really hasn't aged well unlike City. It's unfocused, the riffs simply aren't there in that they seem carried by industrial programming sounds. It's a fun little experiment especially in light of coming off of the Steve Vai album. The more straightforward jams like SYL and Skin Me just come off as forced compared to the tracks off of City, s/t or even The New Black.

Some of it definitely sounds forced, but in a way, that was the point. Devin intentionally forced it, you know.

I still love it. I remember when I bought: basic training, on town pass, in October 1995. I bought this album, Manson's Smells Like Children EP, and Life of Agony's Ugly. All on cassette.

These three albums were my soundtrack during tech school for the four months after basic training. While I don't think either of them are great, each one is kind of special to me. Lots of good memories attached to them.
