I gave this a 93. It took awhile to get into this, maybe a week or so. The more prevelant doom influences took some getting used to and a few quirks here and there put me off at first. However, at this point this comes a close 3rd to Black Seeds and In Their Darkened Shrines. A great return to form after the good but not great Annihilation of the Wicked. Should finish in my year end top 5. I honestly didn't think they could pull it off again.

I beg to differ.

I agree but I'd give the album more around 55. Papyrus etetc was kind of cool and so were the guitar solos

I love this album. It's my album of the year so far. 95/100.
Just one little niggle with the review:

Quote:
Fortunately, Sanders’ vocals are exceptionally clear on Ithyphallic; given the richness of their lyrics, it’s quite nice to be able to understand at least most of the song.

Karl does very little of the vocals on this album. Its all Dallas. Or at least thats what I think.

Nice to see you did a bit of research for your introductory passage on the meaning of the word, Kayla. Perhaps you are forgetting, though, that while the word is Greek, the custom of the Ithyphallus is far more Egyptian. Indeed, the very symbol of the Ankh signifies a sort of girdle which men of the Old Kingdom and older wore in order to boost their libido. It always cracks me up to see people wear it these days

Nice album, better than AotW, not as good as ItDS. I find that some songs drag on endlessly, such as Eat of the Dead.

Nile still remain my favorite death band but they're getting worse every album, this one had a lot of filler like the last one.

Doubtless this'll get a few rolls, but I loved Annihilation. It was much easier to get into than their others, and really felt like the band was taking time to experiment rather than just rattle out another set of three-minute tech-whirlwinds. Nile are great, think they get better rather than worse with age.

Right now all I've listened to was ITDS, which is oe of the most excellent and brutal CDs I own (I know a lot of you probably have heard way more brutal stuff, but I've only been into metal for about 2 years, so cut me some slack).

i think that the stronger production as seen on AotW and this album really helps the band, and that the band is as good as ever, if not better. this album rocks and is my #1 death metal pick for this year (my only death metal pick this year too, but don't tell anyone).

Seriously awesome. Not since the passing of Chuck Schuldiner has a death metal band grabbed so totally. I'm not really getting the dip-in-quality some are expressing here. Granted, I got on the band with In their darkened shrines and dont own the albums that preceded it, but from what ive heard its just as killer. I doubt that people would miss Laureano that much? Of course he made the beats on Shrines awesome but Kollias is a mofo-BEAST on both Annihilation and this one.

Oh well, still definitely the top death metal record of 2007 for me so far.

Got this yesterday, not listened yet, letting the tension build a little. One thing that I am disappointed at already is, having paid extra for the limited digipack, there aren't Karl's comments on the songs in the booklet as there was previously. I don't suppose the regular release's booklet has them...?

I noticed that too.A bit disappointing, after getting quite accustomed to it.If anyone can say please do.Maybe NuclearBlast talked em' into holding out on "special" features like that until they do a compilation special release a decade later.Nice avy dude! :dio:

I think 83 is a fair score and good review.I'm torn myself, they "used" to be my favorite band for some time now,and may very well reclaim that top spot someday. But my dislike for some of the songs on here, the lack of descriptons, the somewhat goofy artwork and theme, and just the lack of Karl's complete touch on the songs keeps me from getting into this cd.

Granted I'm a picky guy,but some things I really love about Nile and they aren't here.Such as a plethora of solo's and wankery, plent of variation in songwriting and a serious attitude towards the subject matter.A few songs have serious potential, but are just missing that special something, and often very repetitive and simple.I can't even give this a score if I wanted to.I'll still listen to it and let it sink in but this was a bit disappointing for me.Ah well, here's hoping their next more to my liking.

This definitely isn't as good as Annihilation Of The Wicked. Can't put my finger on it, but it seems more... bland?

Nope, no notes this time, which is horribly disappointing.

When I saw Nile at Ozzfest, Karl didn't do any of the vocals except for a couple growls. 95% of the vocals came from Toller-Wade. I'm not sure if Karl was under the weather or what but it still sounded awesome.

This has become one of my favorite death metal albums of all time, definitely my favorite from Nile, though i havent listened to the newest effort yet. It took a while to really grow on me. I always liked it but as of the last several months its become one of my favorite.
